This is my second time watching this video and it contains a lot of great information. I have since stopped using a pack with my 50 pound hound mix Maggie. She just was not loving it and I already ask a lot out of her. We did the Long Trail in Vermont the last two years, it’s a little over 270 miles and takes about 20-23 days. We are headed to Colorado in late August to hike the Colorado Trail. I think it’s about 480 miles. My dog needs a real sleep system and I finally stopped jerking around and purchased her a 10 degree EE quilt. I should have done this three years ago. I wasted way too much money on lesser quality products, the one you listed from Ruff Wear for example. She is a short haired dog and gets cold fairly easily. From what I have learned from other and from a women named Bailey who has a channel called The Most Important Step. Paw care is very important. Bailey has hiked the entire CDT and many others with her two dogs, one a GS and own a smaller breed and she said paw issues ended their first attempt on the CT. I have met others on the AT getting off with their dogs for the same reason. She goes into great detail on this issue and I highly recommend her channel. I am going to try the boots, more than likely only using them I very rocky areas. I am also trying a product called Pad Tough. We will see how it goes. The Colorado Trail is rocky and very dry and that is what causes issues I am told. I have some months to work on paw protection. You do a great job with your content, thank you. I love hiking with my dog I do my best to take good care of her. If she has an issue we both have an issue. Take care

I agree! I've watched several of Bailey's videos. She is SO knowledgeable and experienced in the arena of thru-hiking with dogs. I hope the EE quilt works out for Maggie. My dogs are currently testing out Alpha Pak. The fit is identical to the packs they were using (from Aliexpress) which is a plus. The durability is a little lacking, BUT the customer service with issues I had was fantastic! Wishing you and your pup a safe fun journey on the Colorado trail 😊🙏

Is this food much lighter than traditional dog food. My dog Maggie and I plan on doing a thru hike of the Colorado Trail in 2025. She does not carry any of her gear or food so it gets heavy on my me. Looking to cut pack weight. Thanks and take care
@SeagrasstoSassafras9 сағат бұрын
YES! The Instinct freeze dried food is very lightweight. As long as it agrees with your pup's tummy, it would be a great option for a longer distance hike! The Honest Kitchen food I mention at the end is about as heavy as regular kibble, and the dogs weren't all that crazy about it.

I told him I would take her and not to worry.She is a year and a half old solid black shepherd very sweet but has food issues she hasn't been fed well and has problems being fed around my other dogs I have had her for a week and she's coming around and she is starting to relax but doesn't want me out of her sight.I walk her after supper while the other dogs are finishing up their food so that keeps things smooth but she hasn't got the walk thing down yet I get drug along and for how thin she is she can pull. can't wait to get her on trail for a few miles.will update soon

This has just been my entire German shepherd owning experience, on a daily basis. I think everyone who has a dog goes through this to some degree, some dogs much more than others (I've only owned large, reactive/behavioral rescue dogs sigh). It's also really annoying how people think every dog is gonna be their friend or how they think their dog should be friends with everyone 🙄🙄🙄 haha, I thought this video was gonna talk about responsibility like keeping your dog physically safe and making sure you know how to patch them up if they're injured or stuff like that. Not sure what exactly I was expecting. But this was equally nice

I'm so glad you found this video helpful. It's definitely a good idea to start out slow 😌 One of the first overnight trips I took with my girl Nora was at a state park I was already familiar with. It was just 1 mile to the site, but we got the hang of things in a somewhat controlled environment. It's totally normal to be a little scared or nervous to get out there on your own. first grads on the little hiker, I like your vids on hiking with a dog some of the things I have learned from your stuff and learned just doing it on my own. I'm like you I dont let people pet my dog or interact with her she has a different attitude when we are out on trail she is not interested in other people and doesn't like other dogs not aggressive just knows this is her space and thats my hooman so stay back. in the tent she must of been tired and laid down on her mat now when she would hear something she would go into alert mode. her nails I would trim but if you use a sander to round them off it helps not to have sharp edges.as far as treckin poles I take both but most of the time I use just one and use my free hand to take up the slack in her lead which I use a 1 inch nylon lead 15 foot and my end is looped to my belt I dont care for the retractable ones for reason if she falls or gets into a bad spot i can lift her or pull her out with it I just dont trust the little rope in those other ones even if it says it will hold 100 lbs or so. no bears where I'm at and too old to be going so far I need resupply

This!!! 100% this. Specially the last part. My dog is my everything, well behaved and thinks everyone is her friend. That said i never let her w/o a leash on the trail cause i know not everyone like dogs as much as i do, for me is more important to keep my dog safe and make other people feel safe than leting everyone know how great my girl is. It also exhasperates me the people who let their dog loose and claim "it's ok, he's friendly" yeah, maybe, but my dog may get scared or anxious if approached suddenly and then throw a bite at yours which may then respond back and get us in a fight. And finally those people who think that because a dog is very well behaved at home but only take it to the woods once or twice a year: the dog may behave very different in a new environment they're not used to, so having a very well behaved dog when you're watching series in your living room doesn't guarantee it'll behave the same outdoors where theres a lot of stimulus he's not used to.
