I honestly think it’s the strongest example of pan-African integration in all of West Africa-I’ve never seen anything like it. What’s strange, though, is the divide. The wealthier areas of the city are mostly controlled by the Italians, who dominate the economy on the islands. It’s like what they’ve done in places from South Africa to Nairobi, using exploitation to stay in control. On the other hand, the African side is fascinating. You see people from all over West Africa living side by side with the local Cape Verdeans. But despite this mix, there’s still a noticeable tension. They rarely allow mixed marriages, and you can sense a deep-seated dislike or disdain toward other Africans from the locals. That’s why I think this is one of the strangest examples of integration I’ve come across.
