Eileen Joyce is one of the most bafflingly underrated pianists in 20th century musical history. She was an outstanding artist, and this quicksilver, elfin performance of Gnomenreigen is as good or better than any, including Rachmaninoff's. Her interpretations are invariably musical, thoughtful, expressive, even in virtuoso pieces like this. I think her reputation as the Yuja Wang of her day, i.e. a glamorous woman pianist who wore different dresses from concert to concert and played the soundtrack for the movie Brief Encounter--worked against her. She was not taken seriously by some because she was an attractive woman.
