Following Judy Garland on stage was almost impossible because no one brought such an excitement to an audience like Judy. When Judy wasn't in the best shape vocally, she's still better than any singer at their peak.Judy knew how to capture an audience. During this same time in 1964 she was only 2 be seen @ the night of 100 stars in london. She stood up, waved, the fans went nuts.It was pandemonium & her fans went nuts that even the Beattles knew they couldnt follow Judy she closed the show.

i just read some of these post, i have been a big Garland fan since i was a child, NO Judy was NOT jealous of Liza, she was NOT riping the mic out of Liza's hand, she was coaching her daughter how to hold a mic so she would be heard, since we all know Judy Garland is was and is the best and outstanding entertainer who ever lived. about her drug problem,

I could just as easily listen to her talk for an hour as hear her sing. She tells a wonderful joke.

from 6:17 until the end of song.....even without being in fine vocal form, Garland was the supreme song stylist...true artistry Luigi ~ nyc

I bet whenever Judy Garland was at a public event where she was a guest, that she was the most famous out of all of them. She had an air about her that was so electric that I don’t think anyone could outshine her.

I love when she talks about Marlena would talk about some of the songs she sang from her movies and that she even through in some of Judy's... Judy was very funny! More people should see this side of her. They won't be quick to keep using the word "tragic" when she is mentioned.

On Google it said that after this show aired, The press nasty to Paar & Garland because of the Marlena story. It's cold & lonely @ the top. Sadly Judy never knew who her true friends were. When she was breaking house records Everyone was around atthe end no one was there for her. Liza wasnt talking to her and Lorna who claims that she loved her more than anyone was gone too. Judy needed rest but had to work to pay off bills after the men in her life ripped her off. RIPJudy!

Wasn't this done the same year Judy was told by her doctors she shouldn't sing for a year? I winced at that final note not because it went rather wide of the mark but because I hope she didn't hurt herself or do damage to the voice she was supposed to be resting. She could easily have re-jigged it so it finished on a quieter note that would have been easier and safer - but this is Judy - the audience expected a big finale and as usual she put us before her own health. And bless her kicking bits of prop round the stage and starting the song while she was clearly not ready - I don't know why they couldn't have just waited a moment for her. Peace, love.

"If Love Were All" and "You're Nearer" "A Foggy Day" all undemanding but she's just as intense and brilliant with these song she was such a perfectionst it killed her not to be great - if you look at her face at 2:06 when he says "what are you going to sing now" Garland is shocked: "me? you want me to sing now?" she clearly doesnt want to and later "are you *SURE* I have to sing now?" she immediately becomes jittery - I think she is thinking "oh christ - this isnt going to be good"

Let me repeat myself. On those days when Judy's voice wasn't in it's best shape, the emotion was just as good as ever. That's the one thing that never changed. Her voice might be rough and weak. But, the one thing that never changed was her unbelievable ability to put so much heart and feeling into her music. AS SOMEONE ONCE SAID, A GARLAND AUDIENCE DOESN'T JUST LISTEN, THEY FEEL. DON'T REMEMBER WHO SAID IT, BUT MAYBE SPENCER TRACY WHO WAS A HUGE FAN OF JUDY'S. When they were both at m.g.m. he kept trying to find a script that they could do, but, Mayer kept saying NO. SO SPENCE RECOMMENDED JUDY TO PLAY THE PART OF IRENE HOFFMAN IN JUDGEMENT AT NUREMBERG. WHICH SHE RECEIVED A BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS NOMINATION. AND OF COURSE SHE DIDN'T WIN. But, she did win the GOLDEN GLOBE FOR JUDGEMENT AND A STAR IS BORN. BUT, SHE WAS NEVER GOING TO WIN AN OSCAR. SHE ALSO SHOULD HAVE BEEN NOMINATED FOR BEST ACTRESS FOR I COULD GO ON SINGING. I DIDN'T PARTICUARLY LIKE THE FILM, BUT, SHE WAS BRILLIANT IN IT. THE HOSPITAL SCENE WAS FANTASTIC.

Look at Judy's face at 2:08 when he says "what are you going to sing now?" she's obviously thinking Oh Christ this is going to be terrible she even says to him "I think you should sing after that last note I hit" and immediately becomes nervous

@defundthewar I am not spreading the Myth I know Judy was a real person with flaws. I read Judy as she got older that she may have been jealous and that it wa Judy who said they's never perform again. I never try to sugar coat Judy Garland I try to defend these newbies that feelthat everytime they watch anything about Judy, they always hear the constant drug abuse and fail to realize that the documentary is made possible because of the tremendous accomplishments & talent, Judy had.

@Marktheho She was on uppers when she was in Vaudeville w/her mother & sisters her mother got her started then when she got to MGM she was still "chunky" & they put her on more and she slimmed down but they got her used to taking those pills. Judy had an addictive personality & unfortunately she got hooked. She gave us many hrs of joy & growing up people looked @ her as a meal ticket. She used those pills as a way to self medicate and in away escape and tohelp her work as hard as she did

I'M SORRY, BUT, LIZA IS NOWHERE IN HER MOTHERS CLASS. LIZA ISN'T EVEN IN THE SAME BALLPARK AS HER MOM. JUDY'S VOICE WAS NOT ON GOOD SHAPE WHEN THIS WAS RECORDED, BUT THE EMOTION THAT SHE SANG WITH IS TOTALLY UNTOUCHABLE. THAT IS WHY THERE IS ONLY ONE "GREATEST" ENTERTAINER WHO EVER LIVED, AND THAT UNQUESTIONABLY IS JUDY, THERE IS NO ONE WHO IS EVEN IN HER NEIGHBORHOOD. HANDS DOWN THE BEST EVER.

@defundthewar I read a story that after Liza performed w/Judy @ the Palladium,Judy seen Liza is becoming a major force & it sparked some kind of jealousy for Judy to say "You'll never share the stage with me again" I'm Not sure how true it is, but 41+yrs after her death, Judy's talent is such that both girls to this day hear the name Judy Garland in every interview. L & L cant capture an audiencethe way Judy did. L&L voices are strong, but both lack the undefinable essence that Judy possessed.

@NFitalianGuy Judy's mother gave her pep pills when she was a teen to keep her thin and give her energy, and when MGM started giving Judy Speed, Judy's mom never told them Judy was on pep pills. and Liza never said her mother was Jealous she said back stage in the wings Judy be cheering , yeah go baby, but on stage she was Judy Garland and gave her a run for her money

What Now My Love was a bad choice of song when she is obviously having vocal problems - it sounds to me like she has laryngitis She sang better than this in later performances so its not as if this was typical for her at this stage in her life They should have aknowledged during the chat that she wanted to sing in spite of her voice and chosen a less demanding song to finish on The final note is a disaster Even the Garland charisma doesnt mask it

I can honestly say this is the worst piece of singing I've seen Judy perform - in other footage she can sound like she's struggling a little vocally but she's so charismatic &her interptretation of the songs are so intelligent & expressive the fact that her voice isnt maybe so great is something you forgive because she performs with such genius and presence But even as a huge Garland fan this is one time I listened to the final thre or four notes and just thought 'oh my god this is really bad!'

After what her life had been up to that point, I am surprised she could sing at all. The booze, the drugs (uppers and downers), the stress of loosing her forturne to greedy and uncaring men, he breakdowns and health problems. So she sounded bad here...so what. You applaud the icon, not the voice.
