The problem with みんあの日本語 is that you often cant tell what concept they are trying to teach you, and half the vocabulary they use is useless to a new learner.
@SEKAI.Insight3 күн бұрын
It is hard to figure out the concepts. I think Minna no Nihongo the same as many workbooks were designed to be used in class by a Japanese instructor. Language Learning through apps and the internet is a pretty recent feature. Did you find any better workbooks?

@@SEKAI.Insight I keep looking at different ones, but haven't found anything I really like. Genki is decent, but still has nonsense in it. Too many textbooks are geared towards students actually in Japan (I will likely never use the post office so I don't need to know that word. Same goes for tape, hole punch, eraser, etc). Too much focus on business and classrooms. I think the biggest flaw in textbooks is the lack of casual Japanese. The polite forms of verbs are taught first, but it ends up causing the English learner massive problems later when they have to learn all the casual conjugations. Casual should be taught first since ます forms are easy to pick up. If you try to make friends, you can't understand anything they are saying because nobody speaks the way the textbooks teach you to speak.

I've been on and off with my Japanese for about 5 years now but ever since I attended an Anime Expo called Bushiroad EXPO last month here in my country the Philippines I happened to meet one of my favorite artists and her name is Tateishi Rin who happened to be the guitarist of one of my all-time favorite all-female rock band called MyGO!!!!! who voiced the character named Chihaya Anon from Bang Dream! It's MyGO!!!!! and in the same event, I also met some of my online friends from Japan who visited our country and that's when I decided to take it seriously not to mention I also have plans to move to Japan a couple of years from now, Don't get me wrong I have basic knowledge about Japanese and my first exposure on it is because of Anime and Japanese Music since I love both art forms although the event is a success and the interactions went great and I understand and speak basic and daily Japanese conversations but after the event that I attended, that's when I decided to bring my A Game. About Duolingo, I only used it for a week before I quit since the lessons are quite repetitive and a bit boring at least for me and decided to take a different route, and other methods like KZbin Tutorials, Shadowing, Immersion Methods like Japanese Podcasts, and Live Streams, etc I will be purchasing Digital Audiobooks soon, and also right now I'm using other apps like Anki.

One small correction! Of course Duolingo has a writing system. for Hiragana too, but still proven by this study (www.u-tokyo.ac.jp/focus/en/press/z0508_00168.html) writing down Hiragana on paper with a pen instead of using a tablet has a much better memorisation rate.

I have a question. I'm not planning to become a polyglot or anything, I just happened to like Spanish and Japanese that I've wanted to learn them for a long time. The problem is, since I started learning Spanish a year ago I've noticed that I'm not practicing English es much as before. Although, I'm fluent in English, I feel like I can't focus on two languages at the same time. I want to fully immerse myself in Spanish but I'm afraid that I won't have time or the energy for English. I'm at an intetmidiate in Spanish, so I started learning Japanese few days ago and I'm taking it easy. Just learning the basics and not rushing anything. I just don't know how to keep up with English while learning two languages at the same time! I'm worried.
@SEKAI.Insight23 күн бұрын
@sheco97 Thank you for your comment! First of all you should check how much time you have in general for language learning. If it's let's say 9 hours a week you can dedicate 3 hours to every language and make a schedule and stick to it. Having a clear plan in my opinion when to learn will make it easier. If you worry that you forget English, how about watching tutorials about Spanish language in English. In this way you learn English and Spanish at the same time! Or you can download "Hello Talk" and make friends with English speaking people! Even if you cannot find the time to study you can speak English with people there in your free time! I hope those tips kind of helped(:

I found i learn better by turning off the pronounciation for each character on duolingo and only turn them on when i forget the pronounciation, thought maybe people would find this helpful. What you're recommending kinda seems less casual. Hopefully using pimsleur in combination would be good enough. Also duolingo does help you understand grammar and the nauances of japanese i think.
@SEKAI.Insight26 күн бұрын
Of course as a starting point Duolingo can be good, but at many places the grammar explanations lack depth. In my opinion even if it takes more time you should learn it the right way from the beginning. If you just use Duolingo and dont use any additional more in depth resources you risk to have the feeling of "knowing japanese", but you will not be able to use it the right way at all. Just scroll through reddit and you see how many duolingo elarners struggle after some years, because duolingo lacks depth
@sociallyawkwardweeabootras145026 күн бұрын
I think Duolingo is pretty good for learning basics and familiarizing myself with random vocabulary (though it's pretty slow if you dont optimize your course). I'm a relatively busy person who took up Japanese as a hobby before eventually joining a Japanese class, and i was surprised how much Duolingo helped with overall familiarity of the language. It definitely will never get me to fluency though, that much is certain. But it's nice for very casual learning and building very small doses of vocabulary at a time. It kinda sucks for kanji because it'll be MONTHS before the app finally starts using kanji instead of just hiragana and katakana in its excercises and example sentences and i basically had to Speedrun the basics to get to that point
@SEKAI.Insight26 күн бұрын
You're right yeah. As a starting point duolingo can be good. For busy people it is also hard to find an entrance into Japanese language. If you compare Duolingo to other applications or learning options, what exactly is it that made duolingo easy to start learning Japanese? Like the stream system or just that it gives you small bits of Japanese?

Thanks for your recommendations. Here is my case, I've been married to a Japanese for almost 30 years, but we live in America, I'm 71 years old, my wife wants to go back to Japan, English is my second language, I've been in Japan so many times, that if I put it together it could amount for almost 2 years, including 3/11/11. I feel I need to learn in a very practical way as I don't have 10 years to get good at it, do you get my drift? What would you recommend for an older person that needs to get by asap?
@SEKAI.Insight3 ай бұрын
Thank you for sharing your case!In this case I would do it as following 1. Define for yourself what your goal is. Do you want to speak japanese with your wife? Do you want to speak everyday japanese? After you defined what you want to achieve I would think about the path. So if you want to speak japanese in daily conversations. Ask your wife to tell you the vocabulary. I also don't know where your japanese level is right now, but you could also try to read the news in japanese. or watch japanese TV. I think at this age it won't be easy, but my recommendation is to suround yourself with japanese in everyday situations. And ask your wife to help you. Another idea would be to put a post it on places in your room.with the words. Like you place a post it that says ドア on a door and so on. She also might know you better than I do. Also she must know what person you are and in which ways you learn the best. You can ask her. My last tip is maybe some elderly person also had the same problem.like you experience! There must be someone that did a post in the internet about how to learn japanese at this age! I wish you good luck! Thank you for watching my video(:

In this day and age I think the easiest way to learn Japanese is software SRS and online immersion. That is to say, using Anki and learning kanji through tools like WaniKani. I have been studying for only 3 weeks so far but I already know a couple of hundred kanji + kana and can understand like 10-15% of the anime I am watching which is quite cool. I began with the Kaishi 1.5k deck + jlabs beginner course with WaniKani at the same time while getting grammar for Cure Dolly. In the end, like you said in the video, it boils down to consistency, but I think that having the right tool set and ease of use is also important. If you dont, you will have days when your study is gonna be inefficient and the vocab you learn forgotten due to lack of SRS.
