Excellent hack for the A2WS !!! The A81WS does a great job but like you said is annoyingly large, doesn't lock, and doesn't even come in black. The Windtech Ultra Series foam filter is as effective as the A81WS and is a little smaller but still kind of large. The Windtech does come in black but doesn't lock so it's still not exactly the perfect solution. Stuffing the A2WS seems to be the best overall solution and the SM57 is capable of very good sound quality as long as you can avoid the pops. Working a 57 closely can be somewhat boomy even if you do eliminate the pops but that is very easily taken care of with a bit of low cut eq.

I just bought one in June of 2024 after much thought. Not wanting to duplicate my A7CR, I got this to start making videos of family. What I discovered is this is more than a good camera, it is incredibly. Whether you are tanking stills or video, this is a beast. I will never get it to overheat as I do this more as a hobby than anything else. But what got me is that it is so fast, so precise, actually makes great photo images, that I feel even I underestimated it. I don't need any other camera if I go places like Disneyland or Legoland. Stick on a 20mm f1.8 and bring along a small zoom and you have it made. The low light capability of this camera makes a lot of difference. I'm going to task this little critter more and more as my main camera. Heck, Leica need not apply, Nikon can stay at the store, done with canon 40 years ago. This camera simply blows my mind. It is more capable than people realize. I was going to take night shots when I saw SpaceX rocket launched from Vandenburg AFB. Being in Riverside, CA, I caught a photo of the vapor trail then quickly slipped to video and got a great video of the rocket. While not knowing too much about exposure since I just got, the image was spectacular. I guess any rocket heading to is spectacular. But this camera is just fantastic.

Nikon messed up big time with the design which is shocking. The strap lug is in the way of the card door

Peter Gregg !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Focusing down to -10 Ev! I think I would definitely call it a low light beast! 😊 Forgive me for mentioning Steve Perry, but he got a chance to shoot for a day and a night, in Florida, with the Z6III and said a lot of very positive things about it. No overheating, and virtually unlimited Buffer! He had a few nits to pick here and there, but very positive. He actually held down the shutter for over two minutes shooting RAW images at 20 FPS, insane! He did knock on it, and deservedly so, for not having actual Bird Detect in the AF. Come on Nikon. Steve Perry is a real person, such as yourself, no fluff, and no B.S. Very talented Wildlife Photographer! As for Gerald Undone, bleh, whilst knowledgeable and well produced, comes across a bit, umm, I don't know and I will leave it at that. 😯 Panny S5II, and then Canon here, for best color in this Video. One thing not covered in this is the dynamic range of the sensor. It’s my understanding that stacked sensors have less dynamic range than non stacked sensors. Anyone know if that applies to the partially stacked sensors? Looks like there may be a Z6III in my future.

In your stacked sensor explanation, you forgot the global stacked sensor. The currently most advanced VF sensor.

I wish my Z8 had a mechanical shutter like the Z6iii does. I get banding shooting high speed sync with godox ad400pros faster than 1/1000s and it would have been an easy fix with the inclution of the mechanical shutter

Actually the Z8 has come down in price a bit since launch to $3500 USD (new, not refurb). So, it's $1000 premium for 8k and no mechanical shutter for exposure, but it's a fully stacked sensor. I was watching Steve Perry's review of a pre-production Z6iii and the Z6iii has something the Z8 doesn't and that is a bottomless buffer - 1000+ shots, but in practice it's "bottomless" - Steve had it shooting for over 2 minutes and was still going until he shut it off. That's important for wildlife, sports, action, and BIF shooters. Amazing features for a $2500 camera - perhaps the best "bang for your buck" camera in the Nikon Z line to date. There's a rumored Z7iii but when Steve asked the Nikon rep about that and they said that they are considering it based on market demand - don't hold your breath just yet.

If in FEB I realized about the Z6iii, I would have waited. Purchased Zf and a few lenses instead. It's almost stupid to take loss of trade in of ZF plus the kit 24-70 f/4 (I have the Z 28-75 2.8 now too) to get Z6iii body. But a Z6iii with more than 24mp, would do it With F mount kit have lots of gear anyway. LOL the AFS 24-70 2.8 G on adapter on Zf is very awkward. The AFS 24-85 3.5-4.5 VR nice to walk around with but is so-so quality consistency on F and adapted on Z.

FYI...The Z6III does not have bird-eye detect while the Z8 and Z9 does have this feature. I suspect the keeper rate for bird photographers might be less due to this. I don't know this for a fact however since I don't have the camera but Steve Perry's initial thoughts tend to indicate it might be a step down compared to the Z8 and Z9 for bird-eye autofocus. He was able to test one for a few hours.

Great review. It does seem to be the new $2,500 winner. I want to dig into this partial stacked sensor. Trying to wrap my head around the tech.

Mine overheats shooting stills in 10 mins and shuts down at any temp in direct sun. If it is cloudy zero issues. This is at 70 degrees

now it became just 1999 USD, i was one step to get it until i saw this, thanks Randy for telling about the over heating, this will not for for me here in very hot and humid Jeddah on the Red sea. the zf is fine, but i want more MP to crop with the 100-400 mm f5.6, most of the birds here are so tiny. hope z6 III is 30 MP and not very expensive.

Hi Peter. 26th May 2024 and I just bought one of these for my Nikon Zf. So far I love this lens. It is my second Viltrox, the first being the 20mm Z-Mount. Great lenses and wonderful prices here in the UK. Also a really good video, as yours always are.

Look at this pair of silver foxes! As a Sony shooter (I choose a system based on glass options), considering photo & video features, price, 'pro' ergonomics etc... The Z8 is the best body to be released since 2017/18. Enjoy it.

I HATE the ZV-1 Mark I. I tried to like it but it just shuts down due to "overheating." It's the camera that Sssniperwolf uses." How she does it, I have no idea. Because I can only get 5 minutes of video out of it before it shuts off.

I missed the live show, but watched the rerun. I am invested in Nikon, but this Sony seems like a nice fit for someone who does a lot of video vlogging. Perhaps I missed it, but is there a clean HDMI out on the camera for live streaming?
