I just took off earth anchors and added a 30 inch straight peace of chain to my traps for woods trapping. I’m gonna use the 2 1/2 inch staples. To many roots and rocks and soft ground for earth anchors. And there is trees everywhere anyway. How many coyotes have ya anchored with staples?

I have found with this set when you get one and it bloats and floats to the ice the beaver freezes and then you have to chisel a large hole around the beaver to remove

They're not uncovering traps because of the bed. A coyote's sense of smell is 400 times better than yours and he's smelt something of concern. Peat moss, waxed dirt, calcium chloride, glycol, and the rest of the shit the modern day trapper has been sold on won't work on a woods critter, especially if mishandled! More to the point, it's not necessary! Bedding is another monkey see, monkey do phenomenon that I've yet to see illustrated on video. A smart vlogger could make a buck proving or disproving the hype, but then I'd have one less subject to rant about. I believe; the last thing you do on a set is cover the entire set with sifted soil (should be native) which makes the area identical. A trap should be wobble free but doesn't require nailing it to the ground, which, unbelievably, I've seen suggested. I trappe3d the Adirondacks for 30 years and that's a lot of woods. All my sets were doubles set for coyotes because there weren't many and I didn't want to give them a second chance.. Good Luck to all!!
@jackriley5974 Жыл бұрын
First time in 40 years I've seen the same type of stake I used back in the day. It worked then and it would now if the "monkey see monkey do" trapper wannabes weren.t brainwashed with all the bull shit on KZbin. But, with regard to dyeing, why?? If you're going to bury them, there is no need? As for scent and factory oils, you're going to put them in boiling water when you wax them anyway? At the turn of the century (before waxed dirt, polyfill, calcium chloride, glycol, cordless drills and ATVs,) many trappers left their traps hanging in a tree on their line for use the next season. They were never dyed or waxed!!

Always nice to see beaver in a baited conibear, but that ice is iffy for sure. Just barely thick enough. Big feed pile, should be a bunch.
@paskinner48122 жыл бұрын
Definitely iffy ice, often a problem in PA. Funny thing is, they were all large beaver in this colony. Good to hear from the man who has taken more beaver than most ever dream about.

Question for you .... why would you leave 2 or 3 inches of poplar on the outside edges of the 330 ? A beaver will grab that whittled end and pull on it and it's no where near the inside of the jaws. Just curious as to your method thanks

There's a reason why the round jaw coils are superior to the square jaw. Especially the old style Victor low lever square jaws. They were junk. Having g said that. The high lever newer version is a vast improvement. But I still like the round jaws best. I'm 58 yrs old and have been trapping since I was 12. I know wh I'm talking about. Lock up on a double long spring is awesome. I've caught 50 pound coyotes in the old Blake and lamb # 2 double longs and they had bent frame and warped jaws and the coyote was still there. I haven't used them in yrs now, but still like them. I use strictly high lever round jaw coils now. I'm gravitating towards restraint cables for coyote now. But love my steel traps and I have several brands and designs for different uses.
