Why did you use straw in your climate though? The house isn't insulated other than the straw walls. Why not earthbag/adobe/earthsip?
@MidlifePrices2 ай бұрын
We thought about earthship. We like strawbale. It's insulated in the roof as well. It's working fabulously.

Watched a good amount of your videos. I don’t think people understand the amount of labor this type of house build truly takes. One hand full of mud/plaster at a time up and down the ladder every time is just crazy
@MidlifePrices4 ай бұрын
It's definitely some work, but you get better at it, and it pays off! At least, I think so!

Square up your building with long ratchet straps before installing siding. The shed/bldg frame can shift (wind or otherwise) use scraps of 2x4s or 2x6s screwed to the inside stud walls to tie the ratchet strap to.

@@MidlifePrices Unpaid plug: There’s a brand of primer I use even over painted surfaces that goes on super thick, which I like because I only paint every 10 Years, has the word ‘Gripper’ in the title. Fills in the cracks really well.
@normbograham6 ай бұрын
The siding choice, is a 10 year product. It only sheds about 95% of the water. So, the rest of the water, goes into the siding, and the water that gets behind, causes drama. If you have any doubts about what I'm saying, go to lowes, or home depot, and look at their shed demo's. They sell them after a few years for this reason. The water that gets into the product, then starts gradually turning the siding into oatmeal, and after 10 years, you can see some oatmealing at the surface that's poping the paint off. I've noticed that old school plywood has a longer life.

He used lp smartside - it has a 50 year warranty on it. I left some exposed and unpainted in the backyard for three years with no detriment except some minor curving of the unsupported board and discoloration. I left the unprimed side up.
@MidlifePrices4 ай бұрын
Hmm. I guess we'll see. Will try to keep it painted well, and hopefully that will make a difference. So far, biggest issue seems to be the sun, but fingers crossed!

Siding would have been easier if you installed the windows after, don't you think? That way you wouldnt have to worry about the odd cut. Don't get me wrong I'm new to building this stuff too. so I'm just doing a lot of research to know what I'm doing before I go build lol
@MidlifePrices4 ай бұрын
It's been a while, but I think it has to be in this order due to the connection of the window to the house. Sheathing, window frame, house wrap, tape. If you put the siding on first, you wouldn't be able to get the proper layering of materials.

What is really crazy is a guy bought a camper and didn’t have hot water and the bypass valve was a qaurter turn but was exactly opposite as should have been valve looked like yours but was qaurter turn but was off? Turned so it looked like t and it let hot water through? Never in 40 yrs seen valve ass backwards like that? Was on a Jaco 24’ pull behind!

Thanks for watching. Nowhere near the insulation of the straw bale house, but not bad. Definitely would have insulated the floor if I wanted to live in it at all, but could be made livable if you wanted to do that.
