I've lived in the Philippines and comparing the Netherlands to the Philippines I feel the same was as you in general when interacting with people in daily life, people are just more open and easy to banter with in the Philippines. I still find Dutch people friendly in general though. I'm Dutch by the way.

The birthday circle is a form of politeness... I am Dutch, we all feel uncomfortable about it as well... But it is just not done to leave people behind somewhere in the back of the room. Every person showing up on a birthday has to be given equal attention... To be attended to... It is an equality/decency thing... Also, in the small traditional Dutch living rooms it turned out to be the most practical solution. Not in the least because, also in good Dutch fashion 😊, everyone shows up at the same time... Think of it like this..; it is not that different from a family gathering for a dinner in a restaurant... You typically want everyone in the party to sit on one, large table.., not one person having to sit on a separate table. To us, traditionally spoken, it is the same with a birthday party 🙂.

1:10 Those steps are my absolute favorite spot to eat icecream from Ill Moulino which is located at the corner a little further still. If you haven't tried it yet, one of the best ice cream places in Utrecht, highly recommended. I am a bit surprised you were shocked about the flatness and low elevation of the Netherlands, I have to assume you did some research on where you would be going? Yeah, congratulating the entire room is appearantly typical Dutch as is the cicle celebration, no idea why we congratulate everyone. As for the cirle celebration. Dutch houses, especially old houses, tend to be small, it was just the most convinient way in "the old times", we kept it like that for years but it is somewhat disappearing. The younger generations tend to do the "mingle" style more. If anyone wants to invade my country... do it on the first monday f the month at noon and nobody will notice. Car go vroom, not bike..... Joking aside, those new style cargobikes are under investigation and currently even banned from sales if I am not mistaken due to some major accidents where bikes simply broke in half, in some cases with children sitting in them. I think it is the Baboe brand specifically. Dutch directness: Also stemming from our Calvinistic past. The Dutch in general have an attitude that is based on "Don't bulls**t me, don't waste my time, don't beat around the bush". If a question can be answered by a simple yes or no, the answer should not involve a 3 minute monologue (as example)

I haven’t been to that ijssalon in ages. Will be heading over with the warmer weather arriving. I’ve always known the Netherlands was flat and low in elevation. But seeing it in person and fully experiencing it when I’d go out biking, walking, driving around, etc was so much different.

Well, once USA will start social developments, the shock they experience coming into Holland will not be so big; but with the left wing and a senile president....that may take a while. Besides: a war will start, as soon as the Americans understand the jokes we make about them....but also that will take a while....

1. It is always entertaining to me that some people don't feel comfortable when the land is under sea level (I don't blame them at all, intellectually I really do understand), having spent over 99% of my life that way. 2. I refuse to do that. I congratulate the one who has his/her birthday (maybe, if we are good friends, the partner for having to have "dealt with that idiot for a year" ;p). The rest gets a wave with a loud "Hi, everyone". 5. Open curtains are just to let in the light imo

Nostalgic memories. I went to the Ardennes with my parents when I was about 12 years old. But that was in 1965 😂Yes we visited the towns you have shown us. And the grottes du Remouchamps. About 20 years later my wife and me made a cycling tour through the Ardennes. That was in the late seventies. One of the small towns we set up out tent was Remouchamps. I even walked on the then not finished very high viaduct for the new highway to Luxembourg. And another 20 and 21 years later I raced Luik - Bastenaken - Luik ( Lieges - Bastogne - Liege ) two times.a famous cycling race. About 250 km in lenght and because of all the steep hillsides you have to climb it is one of the most challeging races for cyclists. It took me more than 8 hours while the professional races do this in about 6 hours. The steepest of all hills is called "La Redoute" it's situated near Remouchamps, and you arrive there after 200 hard kilometers. Both the times I cycled this tour we stayed at a nice hotel in Remouchamps. There is a true joke about the caves of Remouchamps. When the highway to Luxenbourg was constructed in 1980 they built this towering viaduct across the valley at Remouchamps. Using concrete pillars of course. But when pouring the concrete for the fundament for one of the pillars they needed much more concrete as calculated. So they stopped pouring more concrete in. They found out that through a crevasse they were filling up the caves of Remouchamps.🤣

Toilet switches are on the inside btw. Which is not really consistent if you put them on the outside in the bathroom in Europe.

We got it right with ground floor. Look at it like this. A elevator or lift starts at zero in Europe. In the US it starts at one. Now go down. You get -1, -2 or -3 in Europe. You get 0,-1,-2 or -3. Zero can't be a lower floor. It doesn't make sense at all.
@Joey-ct8bm11 ай бұрын
All calculations in the US is weird. A imperial system is not as accurate as a Metric system for instance. Numbers are higher and it's much harder to predict short distance. They even use Latin for AM(Ante Meridiem) and PM(Post Meridiem) to make it more complicated.
