Is there a Purple stole for Lenten and Advance season?
@ThatDeacon8 ай бұрын
I never owned a Purple stole as I used one provided by the parish which marched Lenten vestments owned by the parish. As for Advent some use Blue and others Purple.
@Owen-hu6cv10 ай бұрын
One explanation of the stoles origin is that it comes from the Jewish prayer shawl and that it was just a continuation of that practice.

Correct. The Gospel procession is from the Jewish custom as well.

Wow! I remember my CDC sessions which only lasted about 9 months. Like yours, mine was a diverse group of people including and an artist, a composer, a warden, and a priests spouse (all of which I chose). I also purposely chose people that really didn't know me well but were congregants at my parish. I went in thinking that I would thoroughly be rejected and my Call was all in my head. I had put off discernment for two years but the feeling would NOT go away. We had some intense, emotional sessions that often ended in tears and prayers. I loved hearing your story and recalling my own. Thank you. Another great, and informative episode. Enjoy your August break.

After my recent ordination to the Diaconate I was sent back to my sponsoring church for the summer before I got assigned to my first church. One of the oldest, and most cherished, members of my sponsoring church asked me, "So, when will you become a priest?". It sorta broke my heart because I thought she understood my Call. But, even now I am not surprised by how little TEC knows about our Call and ministry. I am NOT a 'cradle Episcopalian' and have never desired to be clergy but I, somehow, mistakenly thought that those that came before me knew. Thank you for this video. Will Forward.
@ThatDeacon2 жыл бұрын
This happens all the time, and we are told to use this as a teaching experience about the diaconate. That's all well and good. It's time to end the Transitional Diaconate so we must elect bishop's who agree. In the mean time, smile, and teach and do the work you are called to do.

I have somewhat of an uneducated question, but is it possible to permanently be a deacon? Not knowing too much about religion myself, I was under the assumption that deacons were simply volunteers for the church. Is it possible to be ordained as one?
@ThatDeacon2 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delay! Yes, the diaconate is a full and equal order, and predates the priesthood. But, it depends on what denomination you are involved. In the Roman Catholic, Episcopal, Anglican, Lutheran and Orthodox churches it's an order that requires ordination, and seminary study. The call to serve others is a duty of all baptized people. Hope this helps.
@elizabethclayton27612 жыл бұрын
I so appreciate your term "radical hospitality"! How could one wishing to share in such a wonderful blessing be turned away? Being welcomed "in" through sharing the Great Feast may be just the wonderful reason to choose baptism into the Christian faith and a loving lifelong relationship with Christ. Jesus was inclusive, not exclusive. Thank you for your thoughtful overview of both sides.

A decent video for what it is. This appears to be what one church and / or one priest does. Most churches I’ve been in and most priests I’ve served on altar guild for don’t leave the veil open toward the priest. Also, the bound side of the burse should face the congregation and open toward the priest, not open to the side as she has done. Most of the time several extra purificators are kept in the burse. This isn’t a video I would use for instruction to new altar guild members, but the first part of the demonstration, before the veil, was good.

Thank you for this. Regarding the discussion at 8:30-9:45 of the video: I was taught from a young age that the reason we add water to the wine is theological and Scriptural, and it relates to the Crucifixion: "One of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out" -- John 19:34. So the wine (+ water) will become the blood (+ water) of Jesus.
@ThatDeacon4 жыл бұрын
Yes, there are many opinions and traditions surrounding adding water. The early church (outside Jerusalem) was more resurrection focused and would not have thought in those terms. So even at the beginning of home gatherings, there would be no unified tradition. Prior to Constantine, the church was diverse.
@silviagosnell4 жыл бұрын
@@ThatDeacon Thanks for this! To be clear: I didn't mean to argue against what you said; I meant only to chime in with the theology I received, which may very well have been developed later in the history of the Church, especially given that there was no Scriptural canon early on.
@silviagosnell4 жыл бұрын
@@ThatDeacon Indeed, at this point liturgical scholars are pretty unanimous in their view that there has been diversity in liturgical theology and praxis from the Church's earliest days. If I'm not mistaken, this diversity continued after Constantine. (Ambrose of Milan and his sacramental theology of foot washing come to mind... and, needless to say, differences in Eucharist theology were the stuff of Reformation battles). When it comes to uniformity of liturgical ritual, I believe it's not until Charlemagne (or at least Gregory the Great?) that it's imposed by Rome... and, even then, many local rites other than the Roman survived well into the 16th century (e.g., Sarum in England)... and even now (e.g., Mozarabic in Spain). Sorry to drone on, but I find this stuff fascinating. Anyway, thank you for posting the video! I found it very helpful.

Is it okay to dress the Eucharist without a burse. At my church we usually don't have a burse so we usually just have the veil. I take pride in dressing the chalice.
@tr98093 жыл бұрын
It's not a necessity, the minimum is usually a purificator over the chalice, and a corporal and a pall over the patten placed over the chalice. But the burse and veil links us with the ancient use of covering the chalice and patten to make sure flies, dust etc don't get into the chalice. They're still used in the Aramaic, Coptic, Orthodox, and Roman Catholic churches.

"You don't become a deacon. You ARE a deacon and the wider church recognizes it." I think there is some truth in this AND I think formation is important to live fully into your calling.
