After my recent ordination to the Diaconate I was sent back to my sponsoring church for the summer before I got assigned to my first church. One of the oldest, and most cherished, members of my sponsoring church asked me, "So, when will you become a priest?". It sorta broke my heart because I thought she understood my Call. But, even now I am not surprised by how little TEC knows about our Call and ministry. I am NOT a 'cradle Episcopalian' and have never desired to be clergy but I, somehow, mistakenly thought that those that came before me knew. Thank you for this video. Will Forward.

This happens all the time, and we are told to use this as a teaching experience about the diaconate. That's all well and good. It's time to end the Transitional Diaconate so we must elect bishop's who agree. In the mean time, smile, and teach and do the work you are called to do.

I had never heard that explanation prior, so thank you for this clarification. I like the idea of going back to a non-hierarchical view of clerical orders.

Wouldn't most of us, I think. Direct ordination would help, but who knows when that might happen.
