I agree with most of what he said. Except for a few points. On the nine dash line. Even the UN has issued a statement that the Permanent Court of Arbitration ruling is not International law as it has no such authority. PCA is not part of the UN. Territorial rights is limited to 12 nautical miles (about 22.22 km) from the coast. EEZ is limited to 200 nautical miles (370 km) from the coast. Subject to there being no overlapping claims. Are there overlapping claims? China occupies and has claims over a number of islands in the South China Sea. After World War 2, the "victors" including the US UK and France agreed to return the islands in the South China Sea (including Taiwan) to China after Japanese occupation. In 1945, Vietnam was a French colony, Philippines was US colony and Sabah, Sarawak were UK colony. Remember Vietnam, Malaysia Philippines were not independent countries in 1945. So does China have a preceding claim over these islands? I agree ASEAN should talk to China as a grouping.

Much better and much clearer. Here is a question. The location is almost equidistant from Vietnamese shores. Have we had complaints from them? Or any East Asian neighbour? Second what is the legal basis for China’s protect? This because this corridor where drilling is taking place is slap bang in the middle of areas where there is a busy highway for movement of international shipping including the movement of naval vessels and even aircraft carriers of China, Vietnam, Laos, Philipines and Australia (whose naval presence and capability are -I think- minimal), can these ships pass through those EEZs without Malaysia’s (or Vietnamese) permission? Does the law of the sea allow the free passing and repressing of vessels into and out of other nations’ EEZs?

Has Malaysia had complaints from other claimants like Vietnam etc. NO. Malaysia has overlapping claims with Brunei, Phillipines and Vietnam. In some area its claimed by all. But in an area where there is overlap with Vietnam there isa separate agreement to explore. I believe that China has protested that.

in philippine EEZ submission, they not only claim the EEZ around Sabah, they even claim the territorial waters around Sabah. if you look at the current recognise zone, Philippine's EEZ are press right to the coast of Sabah. Malaysia foreign minister visit Manila in person to protest this, and suddenly we have philippine media "leaking" this protest shortly after. think about it... what is the agenda here? the Phlippines claim against Malaysia is far more aggressive than the China claims...

We cannot have a hugh disparity of wealth around the world cause by manipulation of the rich countries..So de dolarisation may be a way forward to promote a fair competition At the same time, leaders of most the global south should also promote good education, skill and minimize corruption.

Reason Number 7 and the real reason. The Malaysian ruling party sees this as an opportunity to score political points with both the anti-West and pro-China elements of its population (which are both rather strong due to toxic racial and religious politics endemic in Malaysia) in order to win the next election. Singapore and Indonesia practice far more constructive politics and have no need to descend to these depths.

SG will not be able to join BRICS if it wants to as its economy and military are heavily dependent on the US. The bulk of SG’s sovereign wealth is parked in the US economy and its military hardware and training are all US-centric. Btw, there’s a US naval base in Changi, in case you were unaware.

ASIEAN first: Indonesia prioritizes the basis of ASEAN economic stability, because of the importance of equality and stability. How can you join another new platform, if the region itself is still not established? Susceptibility to change character will create distrust and tend to be detrimental. Indonesia has been on a strong independent political path and has been tested by global dynamics, and will be the same in the future.🙏
