Insightful and balanced. To assess Asean’s success, we must understand its origins and purpose. As you have pointed out, there are certain things that ASEAN is not set up to do. It is an inter-governmental organisation where decisions and actions are dependent on member states and the consensus they achieve. When there is no consensus, consultations continue. Consensus is usually achieved when members interest and will align. So, ASEAN can be helpful if we understand its makeup. Despite the shortcomings of ASEAN, there is no second-best option to ASEAN for our region. So it can't be useless, only useful. ASEAN has undeniably plugged the region into global politics and economics. Thanks, Datuk, for your thought-provoking video. I shared my thoughts based on my experience working in ASEAN and outside of ASEAN.

Thank you Dr Pusphanathan. Coming from you, as former DSG, your thoughts are valuable. "So it can't be useless, only useful" is an excellent descriptor for ASEAN.

Tensions are heating up. This is a time bomb and there is a risk of military confrontation. The 20th century has seen three Indochina wars and hope it stops there.

You're right. We need level headed thinking in order to avoid falling into the same trap of wars.

The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea recognizes Philippines EEZ determination that all the islands within the South China Sea are not belong to china' is belong to The Philippines EEZ based on history Philippines was a US colony before WWII, so it Is illegal for the China to claim territorial boundaries in his neighboring country and philippines EEZ. Based on history, Spain established its first permanent settlement in the Philippines in 1565. Spanish colonial control of the Philippines continued until 1898, when the United States took possession of the islands as a territory after winning the Spanish-American War. The Philippine Revolution, a struggle for independence from Spanish colonial rule, had been ongoing since 1896, and news that the US would replace Spain as colonial overlord was unwelcome to many Filipinos. The First Philippine Republic declared independence and established a constitutional government in 1899, which American military officials viewed as an act of insurrection. Later that year, the Philippine-American War broke out as the Republic declared war on the United States. By 1902, when the U.S. Congress passed legislation creating the Philippine Assembly, hundreds of thousands of Filipinos had been killed or died of famine or disease as a result of the brutal war. World War ll When Japanese invasions happens the objective of the strikes at Pearl Harbor and the Philippines was to shield Japan's drive southward to seize the oil and natural resources of Southeast Asia and the Dutch East Indies. The strategy was to clear the US forces in the Philippines out of the way. While a series of U.S. federal laws gradually increased the amount of legislative authority Filipinos had in their own country, the Philippines was initially administered by an American Governor General and appointed American members of the Philippine Commission as the U.S. military continued to pacify indigenous populations throughout the islands. Though Japan took control of the Philippines during World War II, it returned to U.S. control after the war. In 1946, the U.S. and the Philippines signed the Treaty of Manila, whereupon the United States recognized the independence and sovereignty of the Republic of the Philippines. The Treaty contained a provision that allowed the U.S. to retain existing military bases and assets, which the U.S. continues to actively use. The Japanese occupation of the Philippines occurred between 1942 and 1945 during WWII. Filipinos staged guerrilla resistance against the Japanese until 1945. The Philippines was liberated from Japanese control by Allied forces in 1944. The Philippines was granted full independence by the United States in 1946. So when china claim? Started in 2012 a lies history of the CCP after propaganda!💀 Philippines-China relations have lately been dominated by the territorial disputes in the West Philippine Sea, which has escalated since the naval standoff over the Scarborough Shoal in April 2012 and aggravated by issues of Chinese illegal occupation, unlawful establishment of infrastructures, and incidents of incursions and encroachment within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Bilateral ties took a downturn when the Philippine government filed an arbitration case against China under the United Na-tional Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in January 2013 challenging the legality of China’s nine-dash line claim over the contested waters. The fact that they ignored the historical of the Philippines Velarde Map dated back over 1734 and is much older than 9 dash line of China that claiming established it on 1952 after the WW2 and 10 dash line on 2023! Even quin dynasty has no chance, because the ancient China doesn't have it's own Map' shows into Pacific Region! This is not Huangyan Dao. The internationally recognized name is Scarborough Shoal (Panacot Shoal under the old Velarde Map of the Philippines in 1734 china has no authority to claim the lagoon within the 200 EEZ of the Philippines, remember that always. The agreement violates the 1987 Constitution and it is void China doesn't recognize their real history So they are completely doom and also the fact' Chinese are brainwashed for propaganda by Xi and tempting to establishing dominance in the West Philippines Sea, China seeks to create a strategic barrier around Taiwan, hindering any potential support from the US and other allies in the event of an attack. This calculated move, from Chinese , underscores the complexity and significance of the geopolitical dynamics at play in the region. Don't Listen on china's claim for informing those outside of China who may be seduced by the propaganda put forth by the CCP. Just Search it on google: Start of Philippines tensions between china you will find china has been aggressive in this entire time. Trying to create warfare against the US Surely those tofu emperors will going to get exposed and all the darkside of china! Watch china uncensored to learns from them they really did a great job revealing china's aggression action over the world!

Thanks Dato for the insights of a very complex issue just across our shoreline. A code of conduct for ASEAN appears to be in the right direction. However would this code stand the possibility of leadership changes among ASEAN countries. For instance Marcos approach towards China’s incursion is different to Duterte. Similarly it can change in other countries if they become more dependent on China’s economic influence. I suppose ASEAN needs to achieve economic independence collectively before we achieve a sustainable stand against the mighty China in South China Sea. This is a layman’s perspective.
