Thank you, I think of it as therapy. when the check engine light comes on in the new stuff I remember there was a time when there was no check engine light lol

I'm betting it makes you very content to have learned in old iron rather than in modern "comforts". many good skills are lost due to modern equipment "babysitting" the driver.

I had two AlisChalmers six cylinder diesels run away on me years ago. That sucked. Wasn’t ready for that. Managed to save them.

I'm sorry to hear that, it can be very hard to manage the motivation to save them after a run-away. Very glad you did save them though, the younger generation could very much use seeing that once upon a time things were built with a bit of style and not just a gray, white, or black cookie cutter vehicle.

I'm open to ideas for it. The first thing I'd like to do is see it move under its own power just for fun. The next question will be, should it have a stretched frame, or like a 240 wheelbase, a fifth wheel plate? toter body? tow body? a flat deck that dumps like a UTV? I'm guessing this is the issue most others have when taking on a project, which direction to take when you have many ideas and only so much time or parts.

@@Pirateshiplabs Probably make a nice single axle wrecker with something like a 650 Holmes on it. What engine? Is it a PT pump on it? Being 1940's it might still have the disc type pump on it. Whatever you do make sure it's primed well and never let it run dry if it's the disc pump. Probably want to add some lube to the modern fuel if it's a disc. ATF is what I use

i also use atf, i do have a wrecker body im thinking about putting on it. its a small 190 horse cummins naturally aspirated diesel. yes to the PT pump, which is alright by me since they are relatively straightforward to understand. i also have a 90's model Pete frame and axles that it can be put on as the frame it currently has is well rusted out and the steer axle is old enough to not have brakes, considering i do want this to be legal and functional when im done it will need a slight amount of modernizing to pass an annual DOT inspection.

@@Pirateshiplabs You know up until about 1990 we almost never had steering axle brakes on tractors. There were cut off dates for production that didn't require them, and there was a 1977 date that even tractors that were produced with brakes could have them removed. But you had to say you removed them before the 1977 date. Now I never see stuff without brakes, so I haven't read the law in years. “(1) The service brakes shall act on all wheels upon application except for the following:” 67 Pa. Code § 175.94 (iii) The steering axle of a truck or truck-tractor having three or more axles was manufactured before July 25, 1980. The steering axle of truck or truck-tractor having three or more axles manufactured between July 24, 1980 and October 27, 1986 shall be equipped with functioning service brakes not later than February 26, 1988. I'll have to read into it more and check federal regulations, they don't always agree. Is the frame rotted up front, or just behind the cab?

i do know that production dates create exemptions on the current law. that being said, i do like having extra stopping power. the frame is mostly from behind the cab and back i believe, but ill be crawling up and down the unit this week. had to schedule in some spare time to see if the motor will even start as it has been a yard decoration for me for the last 8 years and then after selling that property and moving it hit me that id like to see if it was a waste of 4 hours with a tow truck or not lol
