I like to think intelligent life has a sense of humor as an anasthetic almost, like your limbs going numb in a terrible accident. But laughter is more about blocking mental pain, not just in ourselves, but by seeing others hurt. It's natural, but using laughter instead of empathy can lead to something not very funny at all.

i think its just common because its good. like, it sets up a plausible and mildly funny response (died of cancer) then subverts it at the last second with a response that is not only much less sad, but creates a comically unrealistic situation (killed by a giant crab) with a joke that takes a second or two to register (crab being related to the sign of cancer). the switch between emotions being evoked while keeping that same sad tone only makes it funnier

One of my favourite way to describe irony is Pavlov’s dog. Every time a bell is rung, the dogs mouth starts to drool because it expects a treat, and will run to where it gets fed, that’s simple stuff. BUT, now every time Pavlov hears a bell ring, he will expect to have to give a dog a treat, or for a dog to run up to him. I don’t know why it’s my favourite because it’s difficult to explain to people in real life, but the idea of your theory happening not only to the subjects but to you as-well is funny.
