Your words here were almost vindicating for me bc I've often been concerned about what meaning any abstract painting I do is supposed to have, according to viewers of it. And sometimes I don't know what the meaning is! lol I haven't done any abstract for a while now but watching you inspires me to get back into it. Thank you.

I really enjoyed listening to and watching you. You have a very endearing quality as well as very useful information to offer. I look forward to watching the next one. I have one question - how do you decide on a composition for your paintings? The floral painting in this video for instance, did you know how you wanted it to look? Do you use any kind of resource pictures or photos? Just curious.

Hi, love your videos. Could you do your style of paintings with oils or would the drying times etc hinder you?

Your paintings are beautiful! I am a new subscriber because your words inspired my own thinking. In most professions - accounting, medicine, law, etc., students repeat the works of older and more experienced, even interning with them for several years, replicating exactly what has been done. Innovation too early is also dangerous as it can bring costly mistakes. Repeating is not considered copying. Unfortunately, that is not so in arts making it difficult for new comers. Originality is overrated in my opinion. I think that the professional art fraternity should encourage more replications of the tried and tested ways, while encouraging students of art to make a living while they learn and before they can go off on their own. What is your opinion?

Great idea stacking the tiny bowls of paint and then placing a plastic container over them, but how long will that keep the paint moist??
@skora-theoldguy6 күн бұрын
Hi, Only 3-4 days. But if you put them in a plast box (e.g. IKEA), and use a atomizer every time you leave the colors under a tight "roof" they will stay moist for ever.
@lynetterosario56976 күн бұрын
Do you add a little water to your little paint bowls, or is it just pure paint? Also, do you varnish your finished paintings? Love that NEST painting!

So do you ever paint with oils? I love painting with oils.
@skora-theoldguy6 күн бұрын
Hi Lynette. Yes I started painting oil, but I got headaches and made the shift to acrylics. I love oils as well and use it sometimes. However the fast drying is nice and works with my process, although the longer time to blend the colors is nice to. I decided to stick with acrylics, and develop from this medium. If you like oil ... stick to is ... and go from there.

Painting everyday builds muscle memory and you will no longer think about how obtain a particular skill. When I try to copy someone else’s work, I fail to make it look like a copy. Reason: my style is not their style so it looks like MY copy of their work. But it helps me to learn technique while I discover my original artistic voice.
@skora-theoldguy12 күн бұрын
Thank you for these wise words.
@skora-theoldguy6 күн бұрын
I totally agree. Your own style is the important thing, even if you must gain it through somebody else’s work. However, don’t spend too many hours on trying to be original, it will come to you in time.

I have found that when I reach a point where I am not happy with the painting, it was because it was not going towards the ending vision I had in mind. But, I continued and the finished piece was so much better than my vision.

I’d be interested to hear what you have to say about why we paint. I often paint to master a style but I wonder about the sincerity of my approach. It’s like all the books I have bought and not read, I have them because they are what I should read, that literary or historical reputation compels me, but I don’t read because they don’t hold my attention. I’d find a simple story would be more my taste. The same holds with painting, what should drive or attract me to paint- do I do it out of ambition of a desire to meet the expectations of the art world? How do I simplify my drive? These things concern me at the moment.
@skora-theoldguy6 күн бұрын
Hi Max, Interesting! First of all, if you don't paint for the fun of it, something is wrong. Don't paint to please any other than yourselv. E.g. I like to cook not to please anyone but I find a silent spot in my world, when I do so. Other peoples expectations are irrelevant ... make your own ... take a break and wait until you are ready to paint again. If you still do not feel pleasure, stop painting and write a book instead ... or do something else for your own sake ... that's the key. So why ... because it is fun!

80x100, 40x 50, 50 x100. I do landscapes in oil. I like the CinemaScope look as it is interesting for detail. Lately I’ve taken to smaller format as it is quicker and easier. I might use a square format on a portrait but not a landscape
