As an 84 year old artist still paints every day, I never expected to see such inspirational artworks as yours. I appreciate the way you combine abstraction with thought and intention - not just a lot of colours daubed or poured haphazardly. Bravo! Please share more of your art and techniques

The way you put the various colors on the wet canvas when you start the first stage of your painting to me, is perfect. In my mind, although not in yours, the painting is complete and does not require any further work or refinement.

Hi I am aware, that I sometimes in my process will "pass" a image. That is, I paint on the painting for longer than I really should. It's something I'm working on to avoid. However, for me, I have to follow my intuition and not think too much. It is not always optimal, but at the same time it gives me a lot of good things in terms of immediacy and as I experience it: closeness in the painting. There is a particularly beautiful expression in a sketch, which lies in the many opportunities of the loosely painted picture. But to me it is still "only" a sketch, and I must finish it. It must be used as a starting point for the actual image. I don't know how good this explanation is, but it's the best I can come up with right now. I will think about your comment in my pictures in the future. Thank you for your kind comment. Kind reg. Henrik

Abstraction is such a beautiful tool to express nature! I love painting trees with "clothing." I add non tree colors, shapes, textures, and loose brushwork to dress them. They always remind me of people. Wondrous work, Thank you for sharing ❤

thank you from a 77 year old female artist in Germany! I am a self taught painter from childhood on. My style has gone from kind of realistic to expressionistic with water colours with much success. However, now in my old days living in Greece I have started 7 years ago contemporary Fuid Acrylic Art, which pleases me a lot since the outcome is never predictable . I have seen your paintings for the first time and I must say I am thrilled. The way you transform the original view of nature into a vibrant piece of Art is just amazing. I hope I can learn from you. Thank you so much for the inspiration.

Thank you for your kind comment. I think most of us start out in some form of realism. It is good to train our eyes and accuracy. I myself painted realistic watercolors for many years, before I took up the abstract expression. Good luck with your future paintings.

When I realized I had to pick a career, and not just find jobs, I evaluated my skills and talents: very verbal and small artist ability. I went to law school, instead of art school, and had a nice career. Now retired, I am working to retrieve my painting skills. I don't know how old the Old Guy is, but am likely older. I really am learning so much from him. Thank you, Mr. Old Guy.

Hi I also started studying law. I studied for 4 years before it dawned on me, that I shouldn't become a lawyer, and instead I became an architect. Today I paint as you know, but I have only done so for the past 18 years. It has been good for me, but when I think about it, it was probably a good thing I didn't choose art and painting from the very beginning, and had to support a family.. Of course, you will never find out. By the way the old guy is 71. I'm glad my videos are useful til you, it means a lot to me. It's fun to make them, but it's great that so many people actually use them, so thank you for that, and thank you for your nice comment. Kind regards Henrik

This video was extremely helpful for me. I have never had any formal art training and have been experimenting and learning through videos and small courses for the last five years. I’ve never really heard anyone talk about how one gets inspiration and what one does with that in inspiration. It’s really helpful to me because I get inspiration all the time when I’m out and about in nature or in the car in an urban setting. I take photographs. however, usually if I’m going to use the photograph for inspiration, I try to paint it fairly realistically, maybe with a lot of expression. But it was so helpful to hear how you take the inspiration, and then kind of move in and out of it and expand from it, and like the thought of it changes in a way as your painting, or as you approach. Like trying to catch the essence of what struck me. I really like that idea and that is inspiring me!
@skora-theoldguy6 ай бұрын
Hello Thank you very much for your very interesting comment. At the beginning of my career, I found it quite difficult to detach myself from what originally inspired me. I felt that way until it dawned on me that the interesting thing about my paintings was not the subjects, I chose to paint, but the way I chose to paint it. And as I got a little more experienced, I got better at letting go of what really wasn't so interesting. I turned to the painting and got inspiration from what I had just painted. It is mostly when I get stuck that I enjoy returning to the original source of inspiration, and when you do that you often see something new. The painting is the important thing. Happy painting!

Yes, I actually have, and you're not the first to ask me this. I can see that the sketch or the "open" not quite defined image has a quality. Some of my early works are like that. But I trust my intuition a lot, ie. I paint on a feeling of what is right in a picture. I try not to think too much. If you look at my early works, there is an evolution over time towards the expression I have today, and that too will constantly change... hopefully. This last stage, where I am so far in the process that I can complete the painting, is relatively time consuming, but I really like this. Do I go too far and paint past where the image ideally lies? Maybe ... but it's a risk I'm taking. When I finish a picture, I am convinced that I can no longer add anything to it that makes it better. Sometimes I add something that makes it worse and it can be difficult to go back, yet I often do if I occasionally make a mistake. Thank you for your comment, very relevant to me in all my paintings, and yes, I am constantly considering whether to stop now ... or now ... or

I love to go on a walk for inspiration But being a working professional, I get a couple of hours after a work day and hardly get time to go for a walk. The alternative I have found is, I start sharpening pencils or get the art supplies ready to paint, that helps. Then start with some warm up drawing exercises. Going to try some new things you have suggested in your video soon 😂 Thanks

Yes, doing something: drawing, painting, editing photo ... can be very inspirational. Sounds like you have found a good/perfect way to get in a creative mood.

Thank you for the look into your artistic processes. As a fellow abstract artist I find myself refreshed and inspired by the way others create, regardless of their style or purpose. I am consistently motivated to try my own version of other artists styles or methods, not to copy, but to explore. These pieces are a part of my own private collection that I may use as inspiration when I struggle with ennui, and are not for sale. I believe that every piece of art has a story that enriches the experience of both the viewer and the creator. As an Art History student, I see how artists of the past have depicted and/or impacted the world in which they lived in, as well as the way they continue to be relevant today. While my work is not intended to be remembered in the annals of history, it is intended to evoke some kind feeling in the future owner, rather than to simply take up wall space.

I myself have also had great pleasure in studying other painters process, and I, like you, am very inspired by their ways. I try to integrate interesting parts of other people's process into my own. It is not to copy, but to learn and develop. Good luck with your studies and your painting process.

So glad I found you, what an inspiration you are! Love your work and really appreciate you sharing the stages you went through to get to the end. Your studio is quit amazing all on its own, can we have a tour sometimes?

Hi Kay. Thank you. Regarding the studio tour ... I have in fact already made a video on "How to organize an art studio", this is about my studio ... go to my channel and it is waiting for you there.

Not so old and kind of cute too. I really am enjoying your videos and helpful thoughts on the process of painting the landscape abstractly, as an amateur newly exploring abstraction myself. Thanks very much!

Wow! Thank you for taking what I imagine might have felt like a risk to share your process and works in progress -- not to mention the forethought to take photos of your pieces along the way 😌 They help ground your comments and I always find it so interesting to see how things evolve. I have been working to rekindle my own painting practice and your videos have been particularly helpful in that effort. I liked all your final pieces but something about the in-progress version of the paraphrase work (here: 13:38 ) really grabbed me

Hello Thank you for your comment. I'm not too afraid to talk about my process, there are no secrets about it. I'm glad I've inspired you to get going again. Thank you for your comments about my paraphrase painting. Good luck to you. Greetings from Denmark

Very insightful to think that inspiration is waiting for us to take up & use, or it may move onto another person if we dont use it. I love how the colours in your works sing. The paraphrase painting is a beautiful expression of the Dalbo. Thank you for the share.

Your comment on ideas finding another artist is something I really believe in. That our ideas arent truly ours, but inspiration seeking a vehicle. If we dont act upon it they will find their way to someone else in order to be born into the world. Also your painting on looking up into the forest canopy reminded me of a poem I wrote, I hope you dont mind me sharing it with you Dark forest Bites of sky, cornflower bright The wind the trees and I The total sum of all our parts Whats the admission to the room in our hearts? A penny? A pound could not be prescribed, some doors only open from the inside. So sit, and admit ( keep it on the level) you need fireproof shoes when you dance with the devil Thanks for your inspirational video. You have a new subscriber

Hi. Thank you for your beautiful poem. Interesting ... I like the phrase "sit and admit" and "Dancing with the Devil" . Du you know Elisabeth Gilbert's book "Big Magic". Is is a very good book. She is a very wise woman, and inspired me a lot. Thank you for watching. Greetings from Denmark
