Thanks Mr. Greg! Yeah, I have been trying that tom thing lately. Kenny Aaronoff does it as well as Bernard Purdy - for years and decades. I have never heard him explain. So, I'm Not sure why, but here is what I have found out. RLRL works quite well on that. It doesn't work all that great with more complex patterns or doing the big high tom to low tom fills. Depending on the song or genre, the larger tom is the more important one, so relegating the higher tom to the right puts it in a less dominating place. I feel like the 12" drum, which is always a bit choked sounding no matter what kind of mount it is on (RIMS or YESS), seems to work better on the left. More resonant. Still studying that phenomena. I LOVE the fact that my ride can be a little more comfortable when the 10 is on the right. The center of the head is further from the ride when I have the ride set like I really want it. I can easily shift the 10 toward the center of the kick. There is more room to do that and get clearance. So on two of these Sting videos, I have it set 10 right. One Seven Days, you will see it put back to the left. Seemed to work better for the fills I wanted to do. So yeah, thanks for noticing. It is a real deal I am working with. Also inter action with the snare drum is less since the 12 is tuned significantly lower than the 10 which is closer to the pitch of the snare drum. WOW! Of course it would be.

Thanks Earl! I kept my drums mixed a bit on the quiet side, but this is to emulate the volume on the original recording very closely. I rode the faders for effect when I mixes it as the song gets louder. Have been doing more "active" mixes rather than static mixes lately. Fun to do and it sounds so much better. The 22" Paiste Trad light jazz ride was the best fit for this song. Thank you!

Think you got the title wrong. It should read "What if some drummers had TOTO's Africa on in the background - but ignored it completely - while they practiced?" You play like other drummers very well. But let's not pretend even for a second that you're playing along to Africa in their style - you occasionally coincide with the song, but it seems more by luck than judgement. Did you even know there was music on while you played? Because it genuinely seems like the drums and the song are absolutely nothing to do with each other. And before anyone says I'm clearly not a drummer so I don't get it - yes I am a drummer, and have been for well over 30 years.

Hi, great video. I wanted to ask what sort of lacquer you used and if you baked the trombone bell afterwards to harden the lacquer finish so it doesn't come off. The inside of the bell on my Eb tuba is raw brass, I removed the lacquer years ago because it was badly damaged. I did try re lacquering it but as I wasn't able to bake it afterwards it didn't last long. Thanks.
@jimflys2
@jimflys2 20 күн бұрын
I used Nikolas 2105 air-dry. I also use Egyptian if I do a full horn. Both nitrocellulose lacquers airdry. I get too many compliments on how much more open horns seem to play with nitro. There are so many reasons that I am not interested in baked finishes. I used to spay them back in the 80's at a different shop I was in. Never cared for how they flowed out. All this said, overly thinned nitro or the canned stuff will not last real long. 50/50 or 60/40 lacquer to thinner works well with good longevity. It does darken with age. I have examples that have held up so well for 15 to 25 years. I have also hsd horns that I sent out for 2 part baked that have not weathered all that well for the hype. All finishes are temporary in nature. Silver plate and nickel plate are among the most long-lasting and least temporary. All lacquers are more subject to elements like sweat, salts, low and high ph. But lacquers are oh so pretty.

Thanks KMK! I agree with you about DG. I am doing this tom thing because I want to see how it works. Kenny did it back in the day and Bernard as well. Not sure if it was so that there was less snare to small tom sympathetic buzz or if for sticking on how they played fills or if they preferred the larger tom on most fills, but had the smaller one to use for orchestration when it called for it. I have no idea. I kind of like it depending on the type of song. For jazz, I think I would be better of in the trad set up. For rock fills that don't use the typical high to low drop, it is kind of cook. Think RLRL and it is pretty ergonomic. Small, Med, Floor, Floor.

Thank you for bringing this topic up brother ! I recently discovered on KZbin Duffy as a band leader in a small group swinging his butt off at a live outdoor gig I think in Florida? And he takes a solo of scatting like a true be-bop horn player with tons of syncopation in his voice while he's driving the band hard on the drum kit with elegance and grace. He was like Mount Fuji, unmovable. The coordination needed to pull off singing like that while playing drums so steadily was unbelievable. His scat singing was not amateur. He had monstrous coordination to pull that off! Rest in peace Duffy you're an amazing force of nature.
