I'm pretty sure make and break engines are the same as what the old-timers in these parts called "hit and miss" engines. I've only seen stationary ones; it's good to see them on the sea. Thumbs up!

Ed, I was stationed at the Naval Base in Argentia from November 1963 to September 1965, I did not like living in the old drafty WW2 barracks so I rented a room on the Jersey Side with a fisherman/ lobstermen family . The had relatives out in St. Leanord's. When my schedule would match up with the CNN ferry, I would go out to St. Leanord's for some good trout fishing in the spring. On one of my trips out I met Farley Mowat and John De Visser , who were returning to the South Coast where they had wintered the Happy Adventure. John was working on his PHOTO Journal The Rock Within The Sea. Whenever I went out to Burin or St. Leanord's I would bring a bottle or two of Boccardi with me, so we cracked one open in the Salon and had a lengthy conversation. I had just finished reading Sterling Hayden's "Wanderer" . I think we were on the Baccalieu, or the Northern Ranger. I think I had told you about the Church in St Kyrin's, at that time it was still in tact and the path over to St. Leanord's was still groomed. I have pictures of Niech Miller with a string of freshly caught Brook Trout we fried up in butter. I am 79 now and those trips out along the South Coast still haunt me. Cap'n Rick Urban, Port of Lewes, Delaware.

In the 80s, I absorbed the phantom pain that lingered in many of the abandoned bays of Notre Dame... this after Black Island: Autumn cliffs resound gulls delight, salted spray flights of puffin whirr away.

Wonderful Ed... GREAT to see another beautiful pictorial portraying the way we were. Your drone-work and moody music certainly presents "the" mood and perspective. Interestingly, I relay closely to the video, as with the others, having had visited so many of the settlements... most particularly, in 1967 with the CN Coastal Service on the White Bay- Green Bay run aboard the MV Hopedale and in 1971 with DREE on the Resettlement program, (canvasing communities to collect data and seniors' opinions) on the south coast and eastern half of the Prov (1971). Your video helps bring back very fond memories of places and people. THANK YOU.

Thanks Derek! That would have been quite the experience, especially to see what is left in many of theses communities.

Well done. It's good to see some resettlements being resettled or some of their structures renovated. Battle Harbour is a good example. Former residents are also renovating the historic church in Petites. Individual and collective actions such as these can help maintain a historical understanding of the lives of those who long populated these outports.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing. My Mom was a Keeping from Sagona and my husband and I and our two young children made it there from Harbour Breton. We hitched a ride aboard Tiny Bubbles captained by Vince Snook who used to live on the island. Made the connection at Sunny Cottage as he was there playing the guitar for some folks from the care home as I recall. Amazing to visit the place I had heard so many stories about. Would love to go back on a visit to Newfoundland but it is a long drive to Harbour Breton and a long boat ride from Fortune! And iffy weather.

When I was there in 1963 I spent as much time as I could on the South Bay and Burin, Marasheen, Red Island and St. Kyren's. Everything my father told me about from his youth in 1920 and 30's was still the same in the outports. I was fortunate to be able to bring some things they needed from the PX on the Navy base where I was stationed. Cap'n Rick, Port of Lewes, Delaware. My mentor was Sterling Hayden

I was there in 1963, came by CNN Ferry from Argentia, the church was still standing and the paths were well groomed. Was a guest of the Millers and went trout fishing in the lakes above. I missed the ferry and was transported back in a punt( Make & Break) to Placentia. Stil have pictures of me and Neich Miller. We fried them up in bacon grease and ate them like bacon. Visited a few other houses and they all wanted to know about President Kennedy like he was my brother. They all had pictures of him hanging in the parlor! I am 78 now and still remember well.
