what do you think about breaking the dubs up early to manage the HR? I've just found since there is really only one speed on DU (unlike say a rower), the only solution is to break early to save the the heart rate from ballooning up too early in a workout.

@@ryan.coogler Hey Ryan- great question! I can say from my experience, I know exactly what you’re saying and how it feels. But, only you know you, so whatever the number is mentally that you feel you can stay calm/controlled, that’s what you should do. The general rule I use for myself is 60. 60 or less, I go for it, 60+ I have a breakup plan. I expected to do 2 sets, but I still felt good as I moved through 60-70 reps (meaning no sig HR increase). So, in the moment, I went for it. I felt calm enough that I still expected to get right into the WB and go for a big set. All that said, I remember when my DU number was 40. Any more than that and I would be breaking. So, as long as you’re continuing the work/practice/training, you’ll be able to increase that number over time! Hope that helps!

Well, not quite. I did all 3 day one workouts in one day, but had to split up the rest in 1 or 2 a day (due to life logistics). I was able to do all 9 in order across 5 days though (instead of 3). But I totally agree about being quite challenging by myself. Had to tell that inner voice to shut up several times!

John, you are a savage. My wish for you is that your boys can get well acquainted with the special feeling of 50 cal Echo sprints so they can one day watch this video and appreciate what a badass role model their father is. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have shut off the camera and been done with this shit after the first round, but as always, you shut down that inner bitch and pushed through the suffering like a man's man, and reap the rewards that come of it. Not everybody can be as focused and sacrifice as much as Grubb, and to do what you are doing with a reasonable training regime at your age is completely badass. Congrats dude! If the 40 that made it were video reviewed, no doubt you would have made it, but you never bitched about that injustice. Rather, humbly went to volunteer and keep working to be your best. I enjoyed watching this series more than the shitty stream footage, so in a selfish way I'm happy you didn't quite make it, though I'm sure next year you will. Thank you for the inspiration to push a little harder, and not give up when everything hurts and seems bleak. You da man!
