Hi Dr. Baker! Does neurofeedback can help people with suicidal ideation?
@Neurofeedbacktraining
@Neurofeedbacktraining Ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for your question and my apologies for the delay in responding. First off, if you feel like you are possibly going to harm yourself, please reach out to the national suicide hotline: 1-800-273-TALK(8255) or call 911. Immediate connection with someone who cares can make all the difference. Neurofeedback trains the brain to re-regulate and as a potential outcome from de-stressing, clients report feeling greater emotional regulation, calmer, more hopeful and better able to focus and follow through with goals. It also helps with sleep management. Despite these potential benefits, it's important to approach neurofeedback as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. Suicidal ideation is a complex issue that often requires a multi-faceted approach, including therapy, medication, lifestyle changes for improved exercise and sleep, and support from loved ones. Thanks again for your question! Keep educating yourself!

These systems and or courses of sessions are still prohibitively expensive. Brainwave entrainment systems that do not require a subscription are affordable options.
@Neurofeedbacktraining
@Neurofeedbacktraining 3 ай бұрын
You make a valid point! I understand your concerns about the cost of neurofeedback systems like the one offered by Neurofeedback Training Co., especially when compared to more affordable brainwave entrainment devices. It's important to clarify that brainwave entrainment devices and the NeurOptimal neurofeedback system serve different purposes and are built on distinct technologies. Brainwave entrainment devices are designed to induce immediate changes in your state by encouraging your brain to synchronize its wave patterns to the frequencies provided by the device-think of it as temporarily tuning a radio to a specific station. These devices are indeed more affordable and can be effective for short-term state changes, making them a great support if that’s your goal. On the other hand, the NeurOptimal neurofeedback system operates more like a highly sophisticated educational tool for your brain. It doesn’t simply induce a state change; rather, it provides your brain with information about its own activity, allowing it to self-adjust and optimize its functioning over time. This process is akin to teaching someone how to ride a bike as opposed to just giving them a push scooter. While riding a bike requires more skill and practice (and potentially more investment in a quality bike), the long-term benefits-increased balance, flexibility, and endurance-surpass what you can achieve with a scooter, which is simpler to use but offers limited capabilities. While the initial cost of a system like NeurOptimal may seem high, it's a reflection of its advanced technology and the long-term benefits it offers. It's an investment in comprehensive, enduring brain health and performance enhancement, rather than just a temporary aid. We appreciate that the cost can be a barrier, and we strive to make our systems as accessible as possible, including offering payment plans and session packages.

@@atelier27 Thank you for your insightful follow-up! It's great to hear that you have experience with different neurofeedback technologies like the LENS system, which indeed varies from other forms of neurofeedback in its approach and effects. You make a valid point about the potential benefits of entrainment systems acting as "training wheels," helping users become accustomed to certain brain states, which could potentially facilitate easier access to these states over time. This can certainly be beneficial and serve as a stepping stone towards more sophisticated cognitive training tools. Regarding accessibility, you're absolutely right, and it's an important issue we continuously strive to address. We understand that the higher cost of advanced neurofeedback systems can be a significant barrier. This is why we are committed to exploring various options to increase accessibility, such as offering rental options, financing plans, and working with insurance providers where possible. Our goal is to make these powerful tools as accessible as possible to those who could benefit from them. Has Neurofeedback been effective in treating/reversing Anhedonia?
@Neurofeedbacktraining
@Neurofeedbacktraining 4 ай бұрын
Yes, neurofeedback is a beneficial brain training technique that can aid individuals experiencing anhedonia, which is a reduced capacity to feel pleasure. It functions by assisting the brain in adjusting its activity patterns, potentially revitalizing the brain's reward system and enhancing the enjoyment of previously joyless activities. Although not a direct treatment, neurofeedback serves as a supportive method to potentially improve mood and motivation by fostering healthier neural connections. Its role is complementary, offering a non-invasive way to support overall mental wellness and resilience, with research and anecdotal evidence pointing to its positive impact.

For instance, if one or both sensors on the head either comes loose or even disconnects completely, and the user is completely unaware of it. Is there a way for the system to alert the user that the sensor has been disconnected, and won't the loose or disconnected sensor result in a ruined session?

Hi @nvb455 thank you for your feedback and I'm so sorry to hear you are having dissociation, numbness and ideation. I hope you have access to good trauma therapist. Were you using NeurOptimal neurofeedback (a lot of devices are called neurofeedback but work very differently)? I ask because NeurOptimal is not a treatement for PTSD though many find it a support to help the brain re-regulate out of the stress response. It doesn't force state change, it works through real-time feedback gives to the brain about its electrical communication. Usually the shifts are subtle and positive as the brain moves towards greater regulation. When it can't regulate, there often are underlying health issues so I would also recommend getting thorough medical work-up with a holistic doctor with blood work to just rule out other biologically-based contributors to those types of symptoms. Again, thank you for your feedback and wish you all the best on your healing journey.

@@Neurofeedbacktraining from what i understood neuroptimal makes the cns make choices to move away from discomfort to operate better. In that case its not unlogical that for a person who tends to dissociate and it traumatised this means more dissociation. The “anxiety” faded but so did everything else because you can’t selectively dissociate I guess. I feel like I have not dealt with the trauma at all,..i just stopped feeling. There are more people who had similar experiences. I had myself checked and there are no underlying illnesses. I had an EEG done too.
@Neurofeedbacktraining
@Neurofeedbacktraining Жыл бұрын
@@nvb455 Hi, thank you for more detailed information. I'm glad to hear you had your overall health checked. To give a bit of background, my background is in trauma therapy, and a holistic approach to mental health for 22 years. I understand your logic and it makes sense. A couple of points to clarify, NeurOptimal doesn't make the CNS do anything. It provides a cue through an interruption in the music, for that automatic, limbic brain (the part in charge of stress reaction) to pay attention to itself at the millisecond shifting is occurring. The brain is the one who decides what to do with the information. For the brain to choose more dissociation is a choice that actually requires a lot of energy so there would need to be a reason for making that choice. In general, the brain wants to decrease pain but also do so utilizing the least output of energy. Dissociation is the hypo-arousal of the stress response (anxiety being the hyper-arousal), the freeze of fight/flight/freeze is another way to say it. One of the reasons I like NeurOptimal as a support is because it gives that automatic brain the opportunity to see the present moment, and the safety in the present. The stress response is supposed to only be engaged during immediate danger -run, punch, play dead- then the threat is resolved and the brain returns to regulation. So the other piece of the puzzle, and this is now in the talk-therapy realm, is timing of change. I have been humbled in the decades doing this work that I don't know when change will happen. I've learned to honor the individual's timing and readiness for change. This is not to say you want to stay dissociated, but my observation is that sometimes our bodies change more slowly than our minds want. And that can be a frustrating process. Clearly you're on your journey and I encourage you to keep exploring and finding the supports that help you heal. NeurOptimal isn't for everyone in the same way no support or tool for health is good for everyone. And thank you for educating us about your experience.

Hi Moe, thanks for your question. Yes, neurofeedback helps with the brain to manage stress, dissociation being part of the stress reaction of the fight/flight/freeze response. Thanks for your comment. I'm sorry to hear you are feeling extremely miserable. I hope you are able to connect with someone who can be a support to you right now. I would also let your neurofeedback provider know. In my experience a sudden shift in states when doing NeurOptimal is often temporary and often connected to something else shifting. I often start by asking if anything has changed recently at home, work, in relationships, or in health. There's a secondary contributor, which is greater awareness. Often when people do a series of NeurOptimal sessions they become more aware of their felt experience, both in their bodies and emotionally, which is an adaptive shift. (Even if we don't like the feeling.) The more the brain is able to make us aware of issues that need attention, the greater the likelihood we will do something. I would encourage you to be curious about the feeling of misery, see what it's communicating, and what's possibly contributing and if it stays intense, please consider speaking to a healthcare professional.

From Amy, Josh's rental coach (approved by Josh): I know he was making small transitions and changes in his first 30 sessions . He mentioned he would try to walk from the stop sign near his house to the field that was a little further down or would stay outside for a couple of hours. To getting a job. Those moments. He mentioned between sessions 50-100 that was when things really started to snowball in a positive direction. He became more calculated to make decisions to go outside and became more in-tune with himself.
