Cartridge comparisons is/has been around for decades..astonishing how nowadays everything is “The Next Best Mom’s Apple Pie”..!! Why don’t people just learn how to shoot whatever chambering works for them?? There was a time the 300 Savage was the cartridge to have for bear..polar bears no less…and anything else that walked in North America!! From 7 Mauser to 284 Winchester to 280 Remington to 7mm RemMag…put in the right hands with practice snd “Decent” hunting skills and knowledge…who cares!! Walk into a ammo store…what cartridge do you suppose is more easily found? ??? 7mm RemMag and it’s performance is AOK!! Not perfect…but no 7mm is. Eh?

All of those mentioned are perfect for whitetail inside 300 yards! When you head past 300.. a magnum would be a better choice.. my opinion That being said.. most game is harvested inside 200 yards.. with the majority inside 75 yards.. at least in the north east! There are the field shots.. and ridge shots.. but most hunting is in the woods here. My personal favorite is the 7mm-08.. but I've used the 358 Winchester as well! My 358 Winchester is my dedicated black bear rifle.. and I rotate rifles hunting whitetail. I've used the 303 British.. the 30-06; Springfield.. the 7mm-08.. the 350 Remington Mag.. the 350 legend and the 358 Winchester.. and the results were very similar 😊 Great video

What size pike are you catching with that line. I thought we were talkn about shark fishing for a minute there.
@stienfamilyoutdoors
@stienfamilyoutdoors 12 күн бұрын
Haha! That’s a common comment! For line, it isn’t about matching line to the fish but to the lure, and diameter is often more important than breaking strength. When casting lures that can be up to 5oz in weight, I want 17-20lb monofilament or 80-100lb braid to get line diameter that can withstand impact resistance when a backlash occurs or the line digs into a spool. The thicker line is also nice for hard hooksets on pike (and musky) when the drag is locked down to 15lb+. For driving hooks into 40”+ fish. Now, if I was expecting 25” pike and was throwing a 1/2oz spinner bait, I wouldn’t be nearly as concerned with going lighter in line. I think in that case 10-15lb braid (6lb mono) on a spinning reel or 20-30lb braid (10lb mono) for a casting reel would be appropriate.

@stienfamilyoutdoors
@stienfamilyoutdoors 20 күн бұрын
I have about 100yd on it, but have a bit of backing too. I tend to go 400 vs 300 with Shimano. For me, there isn't a lot of benefit to going with the 300. There is a negligible amount of weight savings and then I lose line capacity (which for me is more about maintaining retrieve speed). I like to use the foregrip while fishing, so I don't necessarily need a more palmable reel either.

Also, I'm super curious as to what your barrel life is going to be at those velocities. You should do a video on that if your groups start to open up. The 28 isn't known for great barrel life. The heaviest pill I run is a 180VLD load at 2977 (partly because it is a super accurate node and why eat up more barrel?!)
@claytonbruner1808
@claytonbruner1808 29 күн бұрын
BC/SD do nothing for accuracy if your barrel doesn't like the powder/primer/bullet combo (seating depth, neck tension, etc). If you've found a combo that the barrel loves harmonically then BC/SD become very helpful to accuracy downrange. Especially at longer distances since they perform better against wind and drag for longer periods of travel. And that is an essential component of terminal performance (depending on the bullet style selected). This is where a lot of hunters fail to do their homework. A great example of misunderstood terminal performance is the hunters who complain about lost weight retention in recovered bullets (if it failed they wouldn't have necessarily recovered the bullet). Another example is my PH's reaction to my bullet choice in South Africa last year. I brought an expandable (162gr. ELD-X) for my 28 Nosler. His reaction was "my tracker is going to be busy this week". 9 shots and 9 animals later, including a Blue Wildebeest at 320yds, Kudu, and an Nyala (mule deer sized animal) at 711yds, he had a different understanding of terminal performance. Different bullet designs do different things. I'd assume that hammer is a great bullet to put in a shoulder. It'll devastate bone. Expandables are little grenades and as such a shoulder shot is a bad idea. But slot it in behind or in front of the shoulder and what it does to the chest cavity renders swift results. That wildebeest was nearly 600lbs and went 20yds before piling up. So for me, shot placement is critical to allow a bullet to perform optimally and if BC gives me an advantage, I'm taking it. Thanks for the content!
@jebbum1998
@jebbum1998 Ай бұрын
BC’s and FPS are the only things that matter when making a comparison between these. When you say the 28 has to set the bullet deeper in the case it uses capacity which it does but it has the capability to spare. 7 prc sets the bullet farther outside the shoulder which it does but the 28 still has more capacity. I have both and the 7rem mag which will run with the prc. Neither will run with the 28.

The PRC advertised 3,000 with a 175 ELDX and the 28 advertised 3125 with a 175 ABLR. Both fell considerably short. I literally just finished up load development for the PRC and will be taking it to the range in the next week or so. I'm getting ready to start for the 28 Nosler as well. I have been loading the 25s since the 1970s . 250 Savage , 257 Rob 25-06 & 257wby . Bullet manufacturers have neglected this caliber & only recently produced high bc bullets . For years I shot the Sierra 117gr spbt or the Speer 120gr spbt ( bc of .480) which is the highest bc 25cal Bullet that reliably stabilizes in a 1in10 twist . My current 257wby load is 120gr Speer spbt & a full case of Retumbo with a federal 215 primer & Hornady cases . Bullet seated out as far as the magazine will allow & feed reliably . Muzzle velocities are 3340 to 3350fps & .7 inch groups at 100yds . Lighting of a rifle cartridge with very manageable recoil . For hunting medium game to 450 or 500yrds what more do you need ? For elk I'd use a 120gr Nosler partition or a Barnes 115gr tsx or the ttsx 100gr . Cheers and good shooting

If you’re using the same bullet, the 28 Nosler will always be flatter and hit harder due to its powder capacity. Now if you do something like a 140 grain bullet in the 28 Nosler and shoot a 175+ for the PRC, eventually the PRC will overtake the 28 Nosler in energy and trajectory.

And if you seat a 7 prc into any powder you dont have accurate information or you need training in reloading before your and your followers get servely hurt. I rebarreled and old 7mm to prc at 27 inches 1 in 7 twist 2980 fps is most accurate at 2500 yards and down with 175s. Learn what you need to know not what verybody is not learning.

Good to know the 7 PRC is rocking infinite barrel life! If you treat both the same, I doubt you’re getting better than double the barrel life. Now, I’m shooting my 28 Nosler like a speed demon, but I’m totally okay with having 1/2 - 1/3 the barrel life of a 7 PRC. I don’t think I ever mentioned bullets impeding on the 7 PRC powder column, but they definitely do on the 28 Nosler if using 175+ grain bullets loaded to SAAMI length for a SAAMI chambered barrels. 7 PRC can have the opposite problem with lighter bullets of being loaded to a shorter COAL than SAAMI to maintain neck tension. That isn’t really the purpose of a 7 PRC, but it’s important for folks to know how they intend to use a rifle before they choose a cartridge.

I own a Husqvarna 1651 with Custom stock in 358 Norma magnum. It is a really good and potent caliber. I have lots of moose and a lot of wild boar with it. It usually goes straight through so you won't find bullets. I shot a larger wild boar boar straight from the front at close range 60-70 meters. The bullet went under the neck and I found that bullet way back in the buttock of the boar that weighed around 350 pounds (170 kilos) The bullet looked good like out of a commercial nice good big mushroom high residual weight. I have used and hand loaded with the Woodleigh PP bullet. Now the bullets are almost gone here and I couldn't get hold of the same bullet again. I took Norma Oryx which is supposed to be softer. Need has no law when you can't find what you want. I am a magnum person owning several magnums and only one standard in 30-06. I currently have 30-06, 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag and 358 Norma mag. I am happy with all those calibers. We are only allowed a maximum of 6 hunting weapons here in Sweden. Which is a bit it is difficult to get a waiver on several weapons. I sold my Sako 75 Stainless in 338 win mag when I bought my 358 Norma magnum. Both calibers are good. I shot several boars with 338 win mag hand loaded with Hornady Interbond bullet. I was very satisfied with the effect and the Sako 75 stainless I think is one of the world's most beautiful weapons to look at. It is a big disadvantage that you are limited by the authorities here to first 4 weapons then a maximum of 6 weapons for hunting. I have a sporting license for a shotgun but then I'm not allowed to hunt at all with that weapon and shoot animals with it. So 6 weapons plus a sports license I have. I tried to get a sporting license for another shotgun but it didn't work. But if you are going to have and get a 358 norma magnum, I strongly recommend loading with the Woodleigh PP bullet if you can get hold of it? High residual weight fine moschrom good wound canals on the animals. I have not used the Swift A-Frame in my 358 but have used it in my 7mm rem mag. On normal game that is not dangerous game, I think it is too hard. Deer and wild boar as well as moose I have shot with 7 mm rem mag. I changed the swift A-Frame to the swift scirocco 2 in 150 grain. It was a good change. I also intend to test the Hornady Interbond 154 grain in that caliber.
