Nice tune and lovely to see people dancing to this. Thanks for posting. I was wondering about the tempo, it seems really fast, is this the standard tempo for a maggot?
@rmsgrey Жыл бұрын
It's pretty standard tempo for the dance, maybe toward the faster end, but still perfectly danceable

From which publisher is this Cotillion? I have only read the year 1824 on the website. Is this Cotillion really published in 1824 with a tune from 40 years earlier? (Mozarts K.462 No.1 is from 1784).
@paulcooper81563 жыл бұрын
I've asked around and the music turns out to be just as you suggested, Mozart's K.462 from 1784. The figures are a modern arrangement by Ellis Rogers that demonstrate what could have been danced in 18th century Vienna. The performance seen here is by the Hampshire Regency Dancers at Chawton House in 2011.

This is not a Scottish dance - it's an English dance of 1808 to a Scottish tune. The step is chasse step.

Many Scottish Dances were 'borrowed' by the English and more or less adapted, including pace and steps, to be suitable for the London ballroom - You might enjoy reading the works of Nathaniel Gow and Thomas Wilson
@paulcooper81563 жыл бұрын
FWIW, I've written about the early history of this particular tune here: www.regencydances.org/paper036.php#mcleod . This particular tune has Scottish origins, it became popular in London at around the same date that it was being danced in Edinburgh. At least eight versions of the country dance were published in London between about 1812 and 1814 (with various sequences of figures attached to it). There are many ways to dance this, then and now, vive la différence.

Ah, another splendid dance at Jabberwocky Hall, Squire Flummage-Ffanshawe's house in Finchley-under-Outhouse, as the Squire bellows from the sidelines, "Have some Madeira, my dear!" (Seriously, a great tune for a lively dance. Love the revived ballroom dances. Thank you!)

I am interested in "Mr Turner's Academy cotillion".My 3 x great grandfather was a dancing master in Bath in the regency period.... is this title for the dance any reference to an academy in Bath? regards Val Hannington
@RegencyDancesOrg7 жыл бұрын
Mr Turner's Academy was a dance academy in Boston, USA, and Mr Turner's Academy Cotillion was written about 1783. It was probabaly designed specially to show off the skills of his students. You might enjoy an article I wrote in the JASNA Newsletter dated Winter 2011 about this dance - it even involves an early example of industrial espionage!

Please can you help. I've joined the Guernsey Regency Dancers. I have one gown but would like another. One of the dancers in this video clip is wearing a white dress with a round neck but with lace inserts which give the appearance of a v-neck. Is it possible to purchase this pattern please? Janet
@bonitchka7 жыл бұрын
Hello, Janet! A fairly simple Regency drawstring gown pattern can be had from Sense and Sensibility Patterns. It is called the Elegant Lady’s Closet pattern, and it does not have buttons up the back. The “lace inserts” are a fichu that is tucked into the bodice/corset, quite common for day wear.
