I came across this video today. My father went to school as an auto mechanic. He was just finishing school when WWII broke out. The military retrained him as an aviation mechanic. Unfortunately, after the war, he didn't want anything to do with his experience in Europe. Ended up a manager for JCpenny's. He always had fond memories of his outfit and the planes though and I guess that rubbed off on most of his kids. Great video, thanks

Had two full size Dr1s. One I built from scratch. One I restored. Both from Sand's plans. Had a Nieuport 17 which I sold. Also have a full size Sopwith Pup in the process of being built with another Dr1 under construction. Yea...its a sickness.

What is the recommendation for the empennage brace and upper wires. The Rigging manual doesn't mention what the tension of the upper and lower wires. Just that "Adjust brace wires to proper tension in this sequence; first, assure alignment of stabilizer hinges with lower wires, then adjust upper wires to proper tension while achieving straight alignment of fin hinge." For the wing rigging 750 +- 50 and for center section 800 +- 50. But not for empennage.

Very nicely produced video. I hand prop my c85 j3 . I use to crack the throttle, but asked my self why. An a&p la asked the same question. To prime the cyl. With an air fuel mixture the velocity of air thru the carb will be higher with the throttle closed. Always a anticipate an engineg start. Mags hot or not. Always prop the engine throttle closed. It makes it all just so much sweeter. Try it. If the motor wount start at idle you dnt want to fly it.
@CliffandJanie6 ай бұрын
So many variables that go into that statement and the word "always" should rarely be used! It's really knowing your engine and what it likes and wants. Cold/warm/hot will all make a difference. Did the IA say for what benefit? You would have to start it and then advance the throttle to warm up RPM immediately anyway. We are pretty good with setting the throttle to a spot that once started brings the engine perfectly to 850 RPM which is where it stays until advancing it to 1000 for warmup. Also, anything outside of what the POH says is usually not correct.....

Early 2000s I worked at Cessna in Wichita, KS. My manager was Mr Dick Curtis who owns a Dr1 Triplane he built from scratch. I bought a Pitts S-1S in 2002 and flew around with Mr Curtis and his Triplane. The Pitts and Dr1 are horribly mismatched airplanes but we managed some basic formation. Good luck with your project! Mr Curtis says the Triplane is not a great flying airplane but it's still a hoot. I believe it is directionally unstable with no fixed vertical tail surface so you're constantly on the rudder pedals.

There are several exhaust port resurfacing grinders that bolt on the rocker cover mount & reface the exhaust port without removing the cylinder.
@michaelsamson32768 ай бұрын
Not to mention removing the studs and using an angle die grinder with a sanding disk. What you did would be criminal for a regular shop to do.
@Nord32028 ай бұрын
@@michaelsamson3276 I used to do that before I invested in the exhaust port resurfacer. Also you can use a few thin stainless or cooper exhaust gaskets. No blows exhaust gaskets seal poorly & eventually the exhaust port hole gets larger then the sealing ring on the no blow gasket. You can also get the thick old cooper asbestos gaskets. Use furnace cement instead of Red RTV. Replacing a good cylinder especially with a overhauled one of questionable history is stupid.
@CliffandJanie6 ай бұрын
@@Nord3202 Have to remember, this is KZbin and this is meant to be entertaining and show the process for people to understand it. To put all details in would get boring and unnecessarily long. The cylinder that was replaced was an already overhauled one from the right side so not sure its a "stupid" cylinder. Or were you calling me stupid?! Had this cylinder sent out and overhauled. Few parts tested out of tolerance and replaced. Happy with our decision. Thanks for watching! ....does spruce sell that furnace cement?
