What you are calling the anvil is actually the ratchet (the wheel like part with the ridges) and the other part is the pawl which engages with the ratchet and keeps it from going in the opposite direction. It can be switched to reverse direction.

A friend of mine was throwing out a few rachets. I told him that they were easy to clean and that they sell rebuild kits. Long story, short...I got myself some pretty decent tools for an hour of my time and some brake cleaner!

How did metal bits even get in there?
@SilverloafCustomRazors
@SilverloafCustomRazors 3 күн бұрын
The metal bits are the tops of some of the teeth that got sheared off. Looks like a previous owner abused this ratchet a little bit.

@SilverloafCustomRazors would you replace this based on this damage? I don't see this being reliable long term.
@SilverloafCustomRazors
@SilverloafCustomRazors 3 күн бұрын
I need to test it out in normal use, but I think it will hold up to daily tasks without any need to replace internals any time soon. The worst case symptoms would be under heavier use the teeth that sheared off will skip, but the ratchet will still be functional for a long time, and not hinder work.

I think I would run it through the parts washer or brake cleaner spray. If you’re pulling chunks the remaining lubricants/ gunk are highly contaminated and shot. Whatever lubricants you use should be applied to a very clean handle and ratchet gear. Realistically it is going to be a long time before it gets lubricated again.
@SilverloafCustomRazors

I agree and I definitely would prefer a parts washer, but I don't own one....yet. I did end up taking back apart and spraying all parts down with brake cleaner as shown in the full linked video, seemed to work well.

Kerosene is a better cleaner if you're just going to grease it up afterwards. It's cheaper by the oz. And if you use a jar to soak parts in all the dissolved grease and metal bits settle at the bottom and you can continue to use it again and again. I've used it to clean motorcycle chains that would last over 10k miles. WD-40 contains kerosene. I use it to clean my tools when they get grungy.

Unfortunately these metal bits are the tops of several gear teeth that were sheared off, likely from being abused by a previous owner. Applying too much force for what these ratchets are designed for would certainly do that.

Exodus 21:7-11 7 “When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. 8 If she does not satisfy her owner, he must allow her to be bought back again. But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her. 9 But if the slave’s owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave but as a daughter. 10 “If a man who has married a slave wife takes another wife for himself, he must not neglect the rights of the first wife to food, clothing, and sexual intimacy. 11 If he fails in any of these three obligations, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment.

For me at least, 99% of the time it's a geometry issue. Until fixed, you'll struggle with getting a shave ready edge on them. Nothing is made perfectly. Once you align the spine with the edge, you're good to go from there on. Im actually working on a "Echo razor co" smiling blade razor's spine right now.

@talebmahmoud2692 any cited source with proof other than opinion? As a blade maker I always grind with wheel direction into the cutting edge, not away as it provides solid advantages. As one person stated (and I agree!): "One advantage of the wheel turning into the tool is that the tool is easier to keep in contact with the tool rest maintaining a constant angle. Turning away it tends to rise with the wheel."

I’ve watched so many other videos with sound dropouts and I’m scrambling to figure out what’s wrong with my setup, why I’m not getting audio, only to find out later it was a bad KZbin video. In those cases I get peeved with the KZbin creator for uploading flawed material. So, give me the music and let me smile and tap my toe until Bjarne or the sounds of nature come back online. 4:55 / 7:55 .... "Western Tyers was a small town in the Gippsland[1] region of eastern Victoria (Australia), founded as a timber community in the late 19th century and at its peak home to around 500 residents. Whilst only one original house still stands it once possessed a school, post office and public hall. Until 1969 it was a functioning community but with the closure of the timber mill all the remaining residents left. The town site was bought privately in 1970 as freehold".... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Tyers,_Victoria It was north of Moe, in the mountains of the Moondarra State Park near Walhalla, Victoria Australia.

Why on earth would any adult imagine asking their kids to do this? Responsible, common sense parents would teach their kids/youth to learn work smarter and more efficiently as opposed to working "harder". Imagine getting the same job done without back breaking work. Think of this analogy. At a construction site would you rather be the guy wearing a hardhat and covered in mud/dirt and body beat down from doing labor that takes years off your body and life, or would you rather be the guy at the construction site wearing khakis and a button up and a hardhat?

@@jamiegreen8065 I can't speak for every trade in construction but I did do line work for a contractor to Verizon,and not a single foreman or supervisor I ever met be it with the contractor Woodlawn or even Verizon,had a. College degree. They started at the bottom as a groundsman and worked their asses off to climb the ladder to the positions they were in. Anyways,I get what you're saying about raising your kids to want to leap into jobs that keep them from doing any hard labor. Sadly not everyone will succeed in doing so and will surely have to perform jobs that consist of hard labor. And like the previous comment said a large part of these younger generations are a bit too soft for these tasks. Just the way it is.
