The transfer is OK. It looks like it probably did at the cinema. Always thought Allegro Non Troppo (the Italian Fantasia if you like) would be a wonderful addition to the MoC, especially if they do a 4K restoration and throw in some Bruno Bozzetto shorts as extras. However, despite being in my top 10 all time animated movies it hadn't been released in the UK since the days of VHS and is allegedly stuck in rights hell.

Long time fan of the channel, I dip in and out of your videos, and really appreciate all you do for the love of collecting. I've recently fallen into a similar thought process, where I have an awful lot of films in my back-log and know they need watching. It's the difficulty of being both a film-lover and collector, as many of the films I buy I do plan to see, either because they have historical/artistic significance, or because I trust the Blu-ray Label that is releasing them. One of the things you mentioned in one of your other videos, was being able to think of a film, come back to the collection and then watch it when you feel like it. This, for me, is the key element of film collecting. Whilst I respect you trying to work through your collection (and the kind of content Man V Film makes), I think there's a sweet spot in not overloading yourself, you want to be able to enjoy the films you own, rather than just consume them. A few days ago, I had a yearning to watch Hara-kiri, the Kobayashi film. I went to my shelf, put it on, and thoroughly enjoyed the film, I was in the right mind-set, and mood for a Kobayashi film, and I appreciated it more, because I came to it at the perfect time. I went to my Amazon afterwards, and noticed that I'd purchased the Blu-ray in 2015, it had been sat on my shelf for 10 years... Having a large and varied collection, isn't just about collecting, it's about being able to experience the films you have when you're in the right place to watch them. It's something I'm becoming more and more familiar with as the years roll on and I have less time to watch everything. Sometimes I buy on a complete whim, but other times, using labels like MoC or Arrow Academy or BFI to help curate and develop a varied and interesting collection of films, is precisely why I enjoy collecting. No one will judge you for not watching everything, and I have come to terms with maybe not watching every single film I own. There are box sets of directors that I've been interested in, that I've seen 3 out of 6 films, or 1 out of 3. But that gave me enough flavour and enjoyment, to know that I can revisit more work when the time feels right. Keep up the good work!

Funny timing, I just filmed a new update for this series a couple of weeks ago. Yeah I think that's probably the healthiest way of looking at it, but I'm not a very proactive person and I find pushing myself into these things is more helpful than not. I'd never be able to push myself through the entire collection of unwatched blu-rays though, so something a bit more "manageable" as this works quite well for me. And the variety of films in the MoC collection I still haven't watched makes it quite fun too. Definitely on board with that idea of waiting for the right moment for things though, one of my recent favourite examples was Night on Earth. It was just exactly what I needed, I talk more about that in the video I made on it. I'm currently on holiday and brought a selection of discs, and Dragon Inn jumped out at me, after having recently loved The Valiant Ones, and I've also had that blu-ray since about 2015. Just hit at the right time. While you're right that no one is judging us for not having watched everything in our collections, I'll still say that I judge myself, and quite harshly, haha.

It's possible that technology is nothing more than the forestalling of biological evolution in fhe face of change. And with every new technology, aftereffects arise that are more damaging than the effects that technology was designed to counter. This then generates the need for another technological solution, which in turn also generates damaging side effects. Eventually, the side effects of each step in technological evolution may increase exponentially, faster than technology can develop to counter them, finally resulting in the destruction or near destruction of our species, likely along with a significant portion of other life forms. Right now, human-created climate change looks to be an even greater example of human "stupidity" than the nuclear war was in "On the Beach." They might want to remake "On the Beach" by substituting runaway climate change for nuclear war, sending our planet on its way to becoming an uninhabitable hothouse like Venus. Perhaps instead of Australia, they could substitute Greenland, Iceland, or maybe Anartica.

I think if you took your time and did your reviews on the boxset in sections, creating several videos for the entire boxset would make the most sense. Plus, it would be less exhausting a task for you by doing it gradually. Happy New Year!

I have a now OOP DVD release from Eureka MoC of René Laloux (Fantastic Planet)'s animated film Les Maîtres du temps/Time Masters which would definitely benefit from an upgrade so they have released animation on rare occasions. Would love them to do more!
@NellyCelephant-f7e12 күн бұрын
The Les Maîtres du Temps and Gandahat DVDs were surprisingly poor sellers despite Fantastic Planet being one of the ranges early big hitters. Eurekas rights lapsed over a decade ago so we ain't gonna be getting blus from them anytime soon.

I own a 2020 blu ray release with a very child friendly design on the cover (and very minimal special features), so I held out on picking this Eureka release. Gutted that it's seemingly sold out, but like you say it might prompt the company to take more risks with distributing more animated films to their catalogue - which is never a bad thing.

This film was one of the big surprises for me in 2024. I had the same reaction to that one ultra-violent bit, had to go back and look at it again too. I thought it was a great choice to save that bit till that moment and to have it play out so quickly, really maximizes its impact. I also liked that it verges on the fantastical but doesn't ever fully step into it. The piece of music that they play throughout the film reflects this I think. It's a really beautiful melancholy piece with pretty standard instrumentation, except for this shimmering spacey synth that's overlayed on top. Gives the piece and the film just a tinge of the otherworldly.

I love this film, Scarface is awesome! I'm glad you mentioned the opening shot which is incredible and one of my favourite long takes. I do hope you watch more films from the 1930's as there are so many amazing genre gems from the US but also great films from Europe. And as much as I love Brian De Palma, his version of Scarface is probably my least favourite film from him; so very over the top in a bad way and also a sad influence on hip hop which again is a form of music I adore and wished a bunch of artists did not take to the 1980's Scarface as a reference point.

Surprised you were unhappy with the Louis Feuillade transfers. The only one that looked less than stellar to me was Les Vampires, but I think that one was restored before the others (and perhaps the elements they dealt with weren't as good).
@RazorwireReviewsАй бұрын
I think niggled or annoyed by would be a more accurate term than unhappy, per se. I'll get more into it down the line. I do think Gaumont over processed Les Vampires, but Fantomas looked excellent.

I kind of associate Eureka! with trash cinema. Or even if they do occasionally release a pretty good film, their transfers usually leave a lot to be desired. Hence why this is the boutique label I buy the absolute least from. I do have their extremely OOP release of Fellini's City of Women, which I treasure. It has poor picture quality (but of course) but also very nice packaging and the best extras available for that particular film, so what can you do, right? I think I might get The Secret of NIMH as well. I don't mind it looking bad. I grew up with it and watched it over and over on an awful VHS copy that made the entire film look as dusty as the owl's nest! Didn't bother me at all. In fact, I think I prefer it looking like that!
