You make some logical points and I had similar questions years ago. Thanks to my research, the actual history of singing bowls is now known and it does not match this general knowledge. I did 25 years of research with labs, museums and universities to understand the real origin and evolution of singing bowls. You can read it in my book and everywhere I've shared it online. The earliest singing bowls are not related to early Buddhism nor are they from the bronze age - they are not that old. The historic Buddha's bowl was known to be stone and early Buddhist temple bowls were also stone. Singing bowls may have been begging bowls, temple donation bowls or general purpose bowls. Singing bowls are metallurgically and stylistically related to bowls from ancient Persia. The technology traveled from Persia to Nepal over the silk roads around the 11-12th century AD. The technology changed in the 16th century. I call them early period and late period because the technology dramatically changed. Those later singing bowls are metallurgically and stylistically related to bronze bowls from Southeast Asia, current day Cambodia and Thailand. So the singing bowls are a holdover bronze object. They have been made for the last 800-1000 years and are related to other types of bowls in a direct timeline. This is not a theory - it's been proven in the lab with top archaeological metallurgists and by comparing thousands of antique bowls to put together a cohesive timeline.

Originating in India they were and are food bowls made from bell metal bronze or 'kanza.' Modern bowls are made from brass as sound bowls but all old bowls were used for food. I'm a old bowl dealer. These are the facts.

My bowl has stopped producing the music. It is now creating some weird noise. Can you say why? Can you help me with this?
@anupee22 Жыл бұрын
Hi Rukma, it sounds like it has dropped and cracked. If you strike it and the sound doesn't last for more than 5 seconds, that's most likely what happened.

I've only just come across singing bowls even though it seems that it's been a pretty big thing on YT for a few years. The recommendations probably came my way because I've been looking a lot of meditation content. I love the sound and wanted to see how they work; looks like there's some skill to it. Thanks for the breakdown.

Thank you so much. I am suffering migraine attacks and going to hormone changes in my age and saw that people use bowls and put them one the head and hitting them. Here I would have to choose a size that is lose on the head to make a sound. What would you recommend? Is it like 11 inch or more? Would it be the 3rd eye or rather the crown? I am a beginner with these instruments for meditation and healing and would love to have some guidance on what is best for migraine sufferers. Some basic advice for someone rual living without a shop that sells bowls.
@anupee22 Жыл бұрын
Hi Nicki, any bowl with deep note, lower that 150hz will be good. For putting it on the head, I'd recommend 26cm - 28cm. Trial it first though.
