Thanks for all your hard work. This has been very helpful for my BMS design. I would love if you made a video about implementing different ground planes on a PCB (e.g having distinct ground plans for AVSS , CVSS..etc.) and why having multiple ground planes might be beneficial.

Thanks for the video! I have some questions: If assuming current sensing resistor would be further, where do you want to place the sense resistor filter network - near IC or near current sensing resistor or in the middle? Why? Same question regards thermistor capacitors, do you want them near IC or near thermistor? Thanks!
@eetengineer
@eetengineer 3 күн бұрын
@eelksnis The Current sense resistor doesn't have to be in the middle. I do it for looks mainly. For the filtering, it should be as close to the chipset as possible to minimize any noise being induced after the filter. There is an updated layout video in the Playlist where I correct some mistakes I made with this design.

I also do that when measuring currents beyond my DMM can handle. Either using multiple identical ammeters in parallel or just 1 in parallel with thick wires

Is there a way to test a cell balancing feature? Or do i need to change a resistor in order to to this?
@eetengineer
@eetengineer 6 күн бұрын
You will need to change the resistors. Maybe I should make a V2 with potentiometers.

why would you want to know that current? to estimate ESR?

It's only beneficial to the BMS design and sizing components to "survive" if it happens.

No more dangerous than your microwave oven, you wouldnt be able to buy it if it was a fire hazard. Take a look for the certifications of safety standards it meets, I'll bet it has a UL bage on it. Only hazard there is touching the prongs just like any plug.

Anything with surge protection is not a fire hazard. I don't have this specific one but I have one that has 20 plugs in a straight row down the wall and it's literally the same thing with a different layout. It's worked fine for 10 years.

Technically all power strips are fire hazards according to firemen, but it’s really more about making sure you keep the power under 1000W total to be safe. As long as you aren’t plugging in multiple computers, space heaters, and hair dryers you should be safe. Most power adapters I see for a variety of modern electronics run under 50W each.
@lomein2186
@lomein2186 14 күн бұрын
1800W, since thats the limitation of a 15amp breaker (the receptacle specification thats used all over that extension, also by the looks of the wire gauge aswell). obviously, unless you have another amp rating on the back, from the manufacturer, to negate a lawsuit. But with so many available connections to be made to it, youll surpass it by charging 4~6 devices and trip your breaker
@lomein2186
@lomein2186 14 күн бұрын
which is why space heaters are rated at 1500w, for household use on a 15A 1800W max breaker, as its the initial spike provided to it when plugging it in (which helps trip the breaker if its overloaded)
@lomein2186
@lomein2186 14 күн бұрын
ur right though, my apologies for rambling, keeping it far under is much safer than pushing the maximum specification at all times
@harrison00xXx
@harrison00xXx 12 күн бұрын
poor americans and brits We have 230V and typicall 3500W per plug. Also basically ALL extension cables are rated for 3500W, except lets say overvoltage protected plugs for computers and so Not too rare sight to see 2000W+ devices running on a (rolled in…) extension cable drum or a ton of devices drawing 2000W+ from a single wall plug.

Depends what you plig into it. If youre pulling more than 15 amps and your breaker doesnt shut than its definitely a fire hazard, otherwise you can just have 22 phone chargers and itll be fine

I would use it for my video game consoles, I have like 20 consoles I like to have ready to play, I never have more than 2 on at a time so wouldnt be a hazard. Same with my woodshop, I have a lot of tools plugged into a strip but I only use one at a time.

Quick note. Your sense resistor filter network is backwards. R12 and R13 should be in-between the low side sense resistor and the capacitors. Great work though man, you're the first legit EE I've seen on this site go from concept to product. This is a great intro series to modern electronics design, you killed it!
