I hate school counselors,but- probably because of my own experiences, they all told my parents and weren't helpful, they made it worse.

I began my journey in Community college with psych fell in love with it tried going for substances abuse counselor but got extremely sick that i could not complete my last class which was an inter-ship. Eventually time went by 7 years to be precise and i have decided to go back and get my AA and then BA but was looking at majoring in Spanish and becoming a spanish teacher now, but after watching this it made me remember how I have also wanted to become a school counselor and help children in school who have a hard time. So now Im having a hard time deciding what to do. Spanish major i would start from the bottom which i don't mind. Psych i would need 3 class for my AA to transfer but not sure what would be next to become a school counselor and how long it would take and if my psych would help me. anyone have experience with my situation would really appreciate the help and feedback

Love the vid! Question: If I work for an agency, how likely is it that I'll have enough control to work any day of the week (even weekends) except Monday and Friday? I'll be starting my grad program in the next couple of months and will hopefully be practicing as a counselor no later than two years. Our plan is for my wife to go part time at her company so we can stay on her benefits and insurance but her part-time is only offered as working Monday and Friday and will need someone to watch our daughter while we're both working. Just wondering, how likely it would be that I can have off Monday, Fridays and maybe some Saturdays as they do sometimes work those two.

As a school counselor in New Jersey, I’ve found it incredibly challenging to secure a full-time position in the field. Most opportunities are temporary leave replacements, and even those can be difficult to find. In my most recent position, I served as a leave replacement counselor and quickly realized how much of my time was consumed by administrative tasks and paperwork. It was disheartening to see that I was often unable to focus on supporting students’ social-emotional needs. The school I worked at only had one counselor for the entire elementary population, which made it nearly impossible to provide adequate, consistent support for all students. The only structured time I had to address social-emotional learning was during classroom lessons, and I wished there had been a mandate to check in with students regularly. Many kids won’t seek help on their own, so these proactive check-ins are essential. It’s clear there’s a significant need for school counselors, yet I’ve noticed schools often rely on hiring social workers to address social-emotional needs. Additionally, school counselors are not always trained or prepared to handle crises effectively, which raises concerns about how well these needs are being met. I strongly believe that every elementary school should have at least two school counselors to ensure students’ needs are being addressed. This team-based approach would allow counselors to divide responsibilities, support students more effectively, and make the job more manageable. Interestingly, high schools in New Jersey typically have multiple counselors, yet elementary schools often go without the necessary support. Even in a smaller school with around 200 students, like the one where I worked, having two counselors would have made a significant difference. It’s frustrating that this issue isn’t being prioritized, and it’s unclear why more counselors aren’t advocating for change. If schools expect someone to handle paperwork all day, why not hire additional administrative staff or assistant principals instead? This would allow counselors to focus on their primary role: supporting students’ academic, social, and emotional well-being. Until this imbalance is addressed, both counselors and students will continue to face unnecessary challenges.

Thank you! I'm currently in a school counseling masters program. I sub at my local school, but I'm wondering if you have any suggestions for another job to pursue while I'm in school? Or should I just stick to working in schools to build up my experience? Thank you again!!

Honestly subbing might be the best option unless you're able to work at a mental health facility or hospital after hours. I'm sure you'll choose the right thing!

I want to share this video with the district leadership team because it speaks to what the "gripes" I have been expressing in regards to the appropriate roles vs. the other duties and responsibilities our district school counselors are performing. Thank you for this video, Mr B. Most school counselors are asked to do many jobs because most people do not understand what a school counselor does. You said something important- 77,000 counselors are needed. 11% is needed- unless when the Dept of Education is broken up it is not felt that school counselors are a necessity. By the way, Congratulations!!! I am told your presentation was great at the LSSSCA. Be blessed.
