I had a 2021 and the pickups sucked ass. No warmth, no harmonics. Loved playing the guitar though and want it again, but I'd change those pickups.

Crazy statement, they’re lower output so not going to push the pre-amp as much.

Interesting video but not done correctly, for some reason you can see you hit the strings much harder on the 2018, i wonder why you do that? but it does effect the sound big time ! I have compared a 2018 and 2023 myself and there is very little difference or no difference at all in the pickups if you have the same PU hight, same strings and same playing, same pick etc. There is little difference in the neck shape and I prefer the 2018 but thats very personal. other then that guitars are very much the same, both very, very good guitars

Solodallas seems similar to how a Cali76 compressor adds some boost and thickens the sound.

Keep working on your vibrato - make it like Johns. Smooth, in tune (bends) and in time with the music. Takes lots of playing and practicing with a looper or some real music.

The $4,000 two rock is 80% there. Yeah I hate bluesbreakers in my rig. Fizz city and doesn’t stack well with anything. Not on my board.

the Katana is 100% transparent. the Super Clean gives you nice low end and smooth treble. the Prestige has a little mid cut and the solodallas is it’s own thing

Hi, super interesting video. Do you have the dc resistance readings of the black1's pickups? It seems that they are nowhere to be found, even though it is so easy to measure them wothout doing anything to the guitar.

Wait, ALL THAT TIME to develop the Sky, and it still requires 'improvements'? They're just having to change the guitar to suit beginners and amateurs (sorry, but that's my opinion) who aren't schooled in eq'ing to taste and just run amp at low volume, tone at noon, and guitar wide-open. It also stimulates guitar sales. All the manufacturers have to do it; "new and improved". How many times has a manufacturer ruined a good thing? I don't own a Silver Sky, but I own a ton of Strats from lots of gens and different pickups and tone controls. They don't always get better.

Woah that depth on the FTT and Cornish! Very Close to the TERC. They all sound fantastic as well. I don’t think one can go wrong with any. It comes down to a matter of taste

Thank you for this! I’ve been round and round on forums and FB/IG posts about these exact drives with a (new to me) D-Style amp we’ve seen in JM’s lineup. I have variations of these pedals of course but was so curious and you played through a very similar amp as I have and nailed the tones to help make my decision easier so thanks again! And also your playing is stellar! Dont sell yourself short, was perfect!

Oh, man. It really sucks to be poor. Saved up for 4 years just to now find out I can no longer buy the one with the original pickups unless in the used market. Man the 2018 sounded SO awesome, and thick, and rich in overtones. The new pickups just sounds like a regular low output strat. Nothing special anymore.

Imho, The bridge saddle for intonation is setup differently. It will produce slightly different sound in certain string. I think 2021 setup is the standard and 2018 isn't. I bet the lower E string in 2018 is louder and more treble than 2021. You had to measure the same pickup height to achieve comparable result. Cmiiw.

Nice comparison. Most videos about John Mayer's tone just throw some pedals which he used on stage and affirm the tone is there. You, on the other hand, show the tone happening. The 50% volume part is also great. I have a Waza Craft Blues Driver and really don't know what to do with that pedal. Recently I discovered Mooer Blues Crab which is a decent copy in some aspects, but not the real thing, it lacks some dynamics perhaps. Dumble-style pedals are also interesting for getting JM's tone. I have a pedal called "Dumbler", which replicates some Dumble preamp features and shares similarities with Blues Breaker tone-wise. Is Blues Breaker the first Dumble-style pedal, although the manufacturer intended to make a Marshall Bluesbreaker emulation?

Not sure if i'm right about this, but when you start stacking TS10 with other pedals at 4:40, there's some kind of harmonic distortion, which happens to be common on any combination, so I wonder if it comes from the amp. That particular detail is, in my opinion, what makes JM guitar sound to be incredibly unique, and you are probably the only person I've heard nailing it so far. Good job.
