I just don't get it... can someone explain it to me? The quillon-sweeps-basket construction looks good, and I'm happy they went with a simple design done right, rather than biting more than they can chew when it comes to style. The pommel is ok, it could be better, but it works. So why would you go for a 37-inch blade? Sure, your sword (the maker), do whatever you want, but why? The blade is too narrow to be an ideal cutter, so it needs the tip speed a long blade can achieve, but it's short for that. If it's a side-sword, why make the blade so narrow? If you want a thrust focused rapier, why not go for at least(!) a 40-inch blade? You just want a ren-faire cosplay rapier, why make it sharp? Did people play Dark Souls and actually though that rapiers have short blades? I just don't get who it appeals to. Or is this drastic compromise for the sake of keeping shipping costs low, cuz not ordering one reduces the shipping to zero. Kingston Arms, just go back and reconsider the blade and improve just a bit the pommel. The nut constructions, a huge plus! Old style on other swords, with some 0.5-inch thread at the base of a pommel, needs to go away. Idea: get a proper rapier training blade, grip and pommel from the same sparing manufacturer and use the hilt. Maybe use a triangular-profile file to accentuate the lines here and there. If the hilt survives and does not break under impact, it may work to get a fancier training tool at a lower price. And in principle you can remount the original sharp blade... but again, why?

Tom, never change! Pronouncing Schiavona in the past, now Landsknecht... 😅 I do want to let others know that, if you don't have a pommel, a longer grip is usually needed to have a good balance. This is common for swords in Asian cultures. And historical European fencing manuscripts tell us that longer grips on (langes)messer were also supposed to be used in hooking actions (i.e. hook the hand/arm). So these (28 inch blades and less) are designed for close combat, sometimes almost wrestling with blades, as opposed to longer swords (34 inch blades and more) that are made to focus on the wider fencing actions. Just saying, the grip size is not (just) to have room for the hand.

I just saw their Spada de Lato sidesword, and I feel like I've been waiting for that exact design to be made by someone besides Del TIn for 10 years. Any chance we can have a look at that one? :) This one looks gorgeous, I might have to upgrade my rapier collection.

That’s a badass rapier, Tom. You’re supposed to throw the pommel at your opponent’s face.

My understanding now is that, at some point (because these things change in time) and in some judicial duel traditions (because these things vary from place to place), the accuser had to start the duel by throwing his weapon at the defender. Welding the grip and throwing the pommel was a way to obey this rule while still having your weapon so you could fight (thus circumventing the spirit of the rules). The rest, is just Skallagrim entertainment.

There is a lot of mythology in the historic community about why messers are called messers. Messer simply means knife in German. A messer sword is clearly a sword. I personally believe they were called messers because they were made in the syle of knives, ie: they have a broad tang with panels riveted on to the sides like a knife, instead of a narrow tang with a grip and cross guard fitted on from the bottom and secured by a pommel, as was the style with most swords.

Sounds like a very plausible theory! Thank you for sharing

The Hungarian axe was pretty much the last big infantry weapon in Eastern-Europe before the advent of muskets. This is pretty much your budget halberd you could mass produce for general infantry. It is a generalist weapon designed for both close-quarters combat as well as anti-cavalry duty. It's haft is shorter so it could be used as a general purpose infantry weapon but long enough still to use it as a spear and a hook against cavalry. It might not be the best at the specific things it does, there are specialist weapons that are better at specific things but those were not cheap nor easy to manufacture. Would have seen a far wider usage if the age of muskets wasn't around the corner by the time of its introduction, the history book I read about it said that this was pretty much a super weapon of its time.

Adam Bodorics - Landsknecht 16th Century All-Steel Dagger 🗡️ In the 16th century, a unique style of daggers called Landsknechtdolchen, or "Landsknecht daggers," emerged. 🗡️These daggers combined elements from rondels, quillon daggers, and ballocks, but are distinct in their own right. 🗡️This specific model's hilt is based on an original in a private collection, made from six hand-formed pieces soldered together. 🗡️ The dagger offers a secure grip, locking the user's fist between the guard and pommel. 🗡️ The blade is optimized for thrusting, with a narrow profile, obtuse angles, and a reinforced tip for targeting mail-covered opponents. 🗡️ The scabbard emulates the fashion of the time, and simpler versions can be seen in woodcuts from the period.
