Hi Pete, good to see video from you! Great to see scammell looking and sounding lovely! Be nice if you brought her down to cornwall truck show or west of England steam engine rally. Spent many hours as a teenager riding with father in the ERF with 180 gardner, in the 70s Lovely engine!! 👌

Hi Dave, thanks for the comment. Great to get the Scammell out this Summer. We would love to but the cost of diesel is high and logistics makes it difficult. Maybe one day!

@@TheScammellexplorer Hi Pete, yes the cost of fuel has restricted what you can or can’t do nowadays! Luckily you have some good rallies up in your area. Looking forward to more videos from you, take it steady on the roads mate👍

Used to love testing these the noise when pulling was fantastic!as an older apprentice working on the engines was the dirtiest blackest ever and the oil stain would not come out of your hands! If you had been mucking about the foreman would make sure you got the engine job!this ment no nooke got you ,your oily prints on her undies would not come off!!

That was the death of Gardner engines ! It was a complete disaster ! A poor attempt at trying to compete with Volvo and Scania etc ! We fitted a couple of these to fishing vessels and were soon replaced !

At the end went the bloke says " Well she done it in top." Reminds me of that line in the old Ice cold in Alex film. At the end when the K9 ambulance gets them to Alexandria & John Mills slaps the K9 & says " You good old cow!"

Nice job. The thing that people who have not done this type of work, typically fail to appreciate, is that, after establishing the line of pull, the trickiest part is: attaching the wire rope to the tree. It is one matter to have your ground man attach a synthetic rope of up to 24mm diameter to your climbing rope, so that you can haul it up. A light wire rope requires a bit more effort/care and the wire winch rope on the Explorer would require even more effort/care.

I was on the 1996 Scammel Run driving a Contractor owned by Trevor Williams of Telstar Recovery at the time. The run took place at Whitbread Hop Farm in kent. Has anyone got any footage of that event I'd love to see it.

I would suggest that Gardner are amongst the best diesel engines ever built. Remember them in the old Johannesburg Municipal busses in the 70's and 80's. Super reliable, and ran very well at 5,500' altitude!

I drove an 8wheel Foden tipper with this engine fitted, running at 30ton gross it was the biggest lemon I have ever driven, you would have never known it was fitted with a Turbo, absolutely gutless,no revs no power whatsoever, the F7 Volvo 230 bhp I had before that would run rings around the Foden,it’s no wonder the British truck industry went down the toilet along with Gardner, great engine for industrial use running pumps and generators but useless for road transport. The Swedes have taken over truck sales in this country and is it any wonder.
