I was a REME fitter TA back in around 1985, and my detachment had Explorers, Martians and a couple of EKAs. When the guys went for their yearly camp to Bordon they got shown round the REME museum by a REME officer. When they got to the Explorer he said and this went out of service in the 70s etc. the guys pointed out we still had them, and he nearly passed out. Lovely truck you have there, and much better Gardner engine.

Just saw your video and Oh my, it looks like your vehicle has a Gardner engine. My 50' trawler (Grand Banks Alaskan) has a 6LW Gardner (twins) and I love them. Zero maintenance beyond normal wear and tear for over 15 years. Thanks so much for posting your video and letting me see another one of these wonderful diesel engines.

Did it come with those Motos?
@NavyMustang2 жыл бұрын
@@zeusapollo8688 No, the boat was built near Hong Kong and was delivered to the original owner in eastern Canada with Ford Lehman engines. We believe he was the owner of a Gardner dealership there and installed the engines as demonstrators. We can't think of any other reason. And it would have been expensive since the engines would have had to been completely dismantled to get them into the engine room.

I had the privilege of driving one of these, or something very similar, thirty years ago. I certainly wouldn't have swapped it for the DAF 95 that was my 'daily driver' and I was glad it was only a ten mile hop from one depot to another but it was fun. You certainly feel invincible.

I served my apprenticeship at Cossington Commercials in Leicestershire they had a very similar Scammel with a 5LW possibly 6 I remember the brass plate in front of the gear lever Exceeding 35mph will result in serious transmission damage. I’m pretty sure the chains between the two axles were exposed. In dreary Cossington blue but yours is a beautiful machine.

My compliments on a truly beautiful Explorer, its without a doubt one of the nicest I have ever seen! I restore both German and American Military trucks and I know how much work you have into this one but let me say it certainly shows, it just plain beautiful in every way! Its strange I have never seen a Scammell in the US, I show trucks in all sorts of shows and never a Scammell? I wonder why? In looking in the cab is that big lever by the steering column your gear shift lever? I have always been fascinated by these trucks and yours is amazing! Again my compliments!
@robertrich6632 жыл бұрын
No, it's a 'hill holder'! Pull it down & it depresses the foot brake. Thus a short term handbrake on all 3 axles. The true hand brake is a 'Neates' ratchet, which will fly off.

Great comment, thanks ! In my past I had restored a 1966 Kaiser M543A2, US military wrecker. I loved the strength of that unit, was in parades here in AK, etc. Great to read of others that restore such equipment 👍👍
