I get that they weren’t into slam dancing and hardcore dancing but can’t people at least jump/push mosh and have a little fun?

Is it me, or is this a sloppy disservice to their own (phenomenal) song? Aside from the drums and maybe the bass, it sounds like shit.

I kinda had a similar occurrence. In winter of 1999 , went to a Boston radio station , holiday concert.. At The Drive in were the opening band . I knew nothing of them. I just remember saying "holy fuck , these guys are INSANE" . I've never seen energy like that , on a stage, to this day .

I remember picking up Relationship of Command when it was out and that record got its hooks in me real good. ATDI was on tour in Europe at the time and I thought "I have to see these guys when they get back stateside!" Unfortunately, they decided to disband during that tour so I never got to see them live. And last year, I discovered Drive Like Jehu..... 30+ years too late 😕 DLJ was a big influence on ATDI and their first record is excellent stuff \m/

aha that is how I felt when I discovered DLJ a couple months ago. I heard Jim (atdis guitarplayer) talking about them on an interview somewhere on youtube.

All he said was please don't throw kicks and punches, nothing about moshing. Moshing is just moving around and bumping into each other. The word mosh actually came from one of the members of Bad Brains pronouncing the word "mash" in his Jamaican accent, way back in the early days of hardcore and the shit caught like wildfire, way before people doing the karate shit at punk shows. As for throwing kicks and punches, that's just crowdkilling.

That was actually some of the most punk sh*t I've ever seen. Cedric just straight up took some expensive looking glasses and tossed them into the pit. With no fks given. A real Robin Hood moment lol I love Cedric.

That’s a great moment when Omar starts throwing his guitar around then just quickly goes over and touches Cedric then goes back to playing. Like some reminder that they’re in it together. That’s intensity. That’s passion.

He's totally correct. If you have ever been involved in a local punk/metal scene, you know there are tons of shitty aggro dudes that use shows as an excuse to physically assault unwilling people that just want to watch the show. That bully mentality is antithetical to what they're trying to accomplish, an environment where they don't have to worry about physical violence from jockish brutes. I'm not even particularly against the idea of moshing really, but when it harms other people that have no desire to take part that kind of ritual, it's a problem.

Im very sure Cedric's tone on moshing has changed in recent years. It's kinda less punk when you dictate how others express themselves at shows. ATDI made some angry, aggressive, chaotic yet Serene, atomospheric, and spacey music. I think expressing yourselves in a way to capture all those emotions is perfect. moshing is fine. Though i feel he was addressing pit karate in its earliest forms in the 2000's. To which that shit aint okay
