Well, this WAS Precursor for her own convertible Super Beetle project, so she needed to learn, but she lost interest before we could get to it and doesn't even want to learn how to drive. That being said, it's nearly impossible to do this by yourself. You need another pair of hands for a few of these steps.

@@musichistorynut I do have a friend who can help luckily. But this is something neither of us have done. I got all of the bows on but a couple of measurements in Chucks manual are confusing so I’m gonna call him before I go any further!

4:39 ... ...lol... My ADHD won't allow me to hand sew those listings. I glazed the bows three times and then set the listings. I'm still lost on where stuff goes. If I'm missing any parts I'm not going to know until I get there. ...lol... oh boy.
@musichistorynut5 ай бұрын
LOL. - oh - it was killing my ADHD too, but that extra strength is really needed - especially if you are in a very hot environment, where even the best adhesives can get goopy and let things come off. (Ask me how I know!). I used too much adhesive with the front bow and the "cap" of the top that goes onto it. It came loose during the first summer. I cleaned it and re-applied, but it didn't help. I ended up using some very shallow screws and thin aluminum strips to stop the material from tearing through the screws to keep things in place. 2 summers later things are still in place. Best wishes on your project!!

That doesn't look stock. The wood is too bright. The one I'm tracing out was a darker more contoured wood. It was also smashed when a building fell on it. ...lol...

I can't wait!!!!!! This car is sitting in my driveway. I'm just now getting prepped to do this top. My sitchoo is different. A building fell on the bug and the wooden bow in the rear got smashed. I'm cutting out a new one. The metal bows got squashed too but they are straight enough now. I gotta install the old top with a new headliner. I redid the bow pad differently though. I didn't like the version that was here so I made mine a little different. It's tailored. ...lol... My main concern is that rear window area. I've never done a convertible top on a bug before. This is different from American cars.

I would be a bit concerned about any metal shavings that internal pipe wrench might cut into the nut and end up in the sump. I would rather make a tool that fit proper. The same part I have is an original and it does not have tapered notches.

it seems like a good idea. However, using metal for sound dampening products isn't that great of an idea. Metals responds to sound and you get what is called "Sound Transference, or oscillation, or harmonic vibrations." No matter how well built it might seem, there is always the possibility of harmonic vibrations and sound transference in your device. A better option, though a little more difficult to work, is a plastic fabric mesh called "Plastic Canvas Sheets." They are easily screwed with plastic screws, or joined together with zip ties or even with tape. The plastic canvas does not create harmonic vibrations or sympathetic sound transference like metal. Another added benefit is the plastic is considerably lighter, yet is strong enough to meet the demands of a mic blimp (aka "dead cat). I am waiting for a delivery of some canvas sheets I ordered from Amazon. I can use my quick release tripod head for mounting and unmounting my Zoom H4N audio recorder, and I have an Azden SMX-10 shotgun mic. I will use a homemade vacuum former to make the dome ends of the blimp with one of the canvas sheets. I can shape both ends simultaneously. One end will have a piano hinge to open and insert the recorder or the microphone. Here's the link for the canvas sheets I ordered. Good build, but it needs some improvement. www.amazon.com/Pllieay-Plastic-Embroidery-Crafting-Projects/dp/B08TC89FT1/ref=sxin_15_pa_sp_search_thematic_sspa?content-id=amzn1.sym.930fd908-4eb3-4a5d-84fa-64f83e2669bd%3Aamzn1.sym.930fd908-4eb3-4a5d-84fa-64f83e2669bd&cv_ct_cx=Cross+Stitch+and+Plastic+Canvas&keywords=Cross+Stitch+and+Plastic+Canvas&pd_rd_i=B08TC89FT1&pd_rd_r=7705a05e-209f-4fbd-82e0-f0c238870646&pd_rd_w=KJwlC&pd_rd_wg=LOB8w&pf_rd_p=930fd908-4eb3-4a5d-84fa-64f83e2669bd&pf_rd_r=QR8ZYZC0N10ZXJV7QNVZ&qid=1674071722&sr=1-2-a3c9e790-170a-4c00-98e1-675937bcbbaa-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzNEVJVFg1QlNNWFFLJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMDczMzE1MTI4T1ZIR1c5QllFOCZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMjg1ODgzMlJBNEs1QkdUNUFZJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3Bfc2VhcmNoX3RoZW1hdGljJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

Thank you very much for taking the time to document, film and edit your efforts on your VW. Well done for what you were up against. Unless you want a showroom quality bug, great job. I just inherited a '74 Super Beetle with a top that is totally trashed and thinking this may be beyond my scale of expertise - especially since I live in a cold-weather state and don't have a heated garage. Again, thanks for comments and efforts. Enjoy your car.

Thanks! As I say, this is more of a cautionary tale. If you were to choose to do it yourself, it can be a good guide of what NOT to do and how to avoid some of the issues I encountered. If anything, it will give you a healthy respect for those people skilled enough to do a pro-level job! Best of luck on your 74! There's nothing like driving an aircooled VW. BTW - Otto has been my daily driver for two years now. The top is still on and going strong.

I can't find any info on this jag,does it need power because the one I got just has a hookup for what it seems to be a DC power cable
@musichistorynut2 жыл бұрын
Jehu Garcia stopped making and selling these a long long time ago. The DC port you see is to charge the battery that runs the vibration for the frosted glass. (Or it is there so you can run it on regular AC power without having to use batteries. I don't remember. I sold mine to get a Letus mini, which I then sold to get a Canon DSLR setup - which is what I am using now). Best of luck! I personally would recommend the Letus products if you are going to keep using a camcorder.

@illegalmindset41222 жыл бұрын
@@musichistorynut is it terrible without the vibrating focus screen or usable?
@musichistorynut2 жыл бұрын
@@illegalmindset4122 Well, yes. You need to have your camera do a "back focus" on the glass. I am not sure the google Pixel has the ability to focus on something only a few inches away. I know my iphone has issues with things that are closer than say 5 inches. The lens will project its image onto that glass. Any imperfections will be seen (grain, scratches, etc), And it is FROSTED, so there are going to be a lot of imperfections on it. The vibrating of the glass makes the scratches and imperfections less noticeable. Test it out and see.
@illegalmindset41222 жыл бұрын
@@musichistorynut I kinda thought so but it's worth a shot I could hook up a little battery pack to it if need be,worth a shot like I said just a tinker project minimum focus should be 3.6 inches but I can put a magnifying lens onto the cage then dof over it and should be much closer we'll see
