If i have head stuck on platter, and open this up, what are the odds it will run long enough after parking just to copy data?

Considering its specific technology and design, as well as the number of heads and platters, it's difficult to determine what caused the heads to get stuck or to assess the condition of the platter surfaces and heads without detailed diagnostics. We strongly advise against attempting DIY data recovery on these helium-filled hard drives.

Hitachi’s Ultrastars reign as a supreme HDD, now the core of WD’s product range-an awesome device. The number of technologies incorporated is incredible (eg: the piezoelectric triple stage head actuator able to accurately locate the 500,000 tracks per inch). I use the HC550 16 Tb-when released it was the World’s first 3.5 in HDD with 9-platters and 18-heads (now with a tenth platter and more capacity). Almost silent in operation (I wish it generated more actuator sounds) and capable of operating (we hope) for 250,000 hours… delivers very detailed SMART reporting, and amazing performance.

My 2.5" HDDs are a bit old, I don't know if they have the function of having automatic parking technology only when inactive? no read/no write/park My models are: WD10JPVX-08JC3T5 and HGST HTS541010A99E662 Auto park technology has evolved in recent years In the reports of people I see some 2.5" HDD enclosure case USB 3.0 after being ejected in Windows 10 they remain connected and operating

When they started using helium atmospheres in them. Anything short of a perfect hermetic seal will not be able to stop the helium escaping the drive, and even then there's always going to be some losses over time because helium atoms are so tiny they can pass clean through seals. Even when they're perfectly hermetically sealed there is some loss of helium due to its ability to diffuse through heavier elements.

Interesting video that I found. Ny the way guys, just bought used, almost new(70 hours of use) WD Ultrastar 14 terabytes drive, it was made in 2019. Despite it being almost new, the Helium levels are 64% :< I bought this drive to use for 20 years period as an archive, but is it already only 64% of helium left, is it bad? Could helium evaporate while drive was just not used?

I understand that someone who doesn't deal with hard drives would open them this way, but a professional...🤯

the simple reason is, these drives are welded shut with helium inside. it's the only way to keep helium sealed reliably for years. if drives with a capacity this high weren't filled with helium, the turbulence caused by normal air would make it impossible for them to work properly.

The background music comes from The Marvel Comics movie The Avengers, which is FICTIONAL. You are implying that you have super-powers that let you fix helium hard drives. But, as we know, super-powers do not exist, so you are telling us that Helium Hard drives only get repaired in comic books. Thanks for the insight.

Does replacing the head immediately allow the contents of the harddrive to be read?

HUGE MISTAKE - around 0:50 you get ready to remove the head but what you fail to show is the removal of the center screw AND, most importantly, the need for an Allen wrench to completely loosen the head.
@HddSurgery

Video shows removing the screw, and there's no need for an Allen wrench with this specific hard drive

I made my own head clamping tool from match wood, it worked well enough. My Seagate one touch 2TB does not have a screw holding the head actuator in place, neither on top or on the bottom. In the case of a drive such as mine, you have to be very careful indeed when removing the headset ( it just lifts off with tweezers), because the magnet is still in place and it can grab the actuator as you lift it off, with potential damage to the platter surface. The bottom R/W head on mine had become detached. So now to find out how to remove the platter without losing the disc ailgnment. Probably really easy like the rest of this stuff which would be best done by a surgeon :) :)

Actually, according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, this should be done differently and with other tools. Is this a tin can? ;-) There have long time ago been normal ways to open such disks. Just ask the engineers at Seagate Rescue Services how they open such drives.
