When they started using helium atmospheres in them. Anything short of a perfect hermetic seal will not be able to stop the helium escaping the drive, and even then there's always going to be some losses over time because helium atoms are so tiny they can pass clean through seals. Even when they're perfectly hermetically sealed there is some loss of helium due to its ability to diffuse through heavier elements.
