I'm thinking of buying this Masso 5 axis or the Acorn6 - I don't need 6 axis - 5 is good enough. Any reason why this may not be good for an industrial multicam 3000 CNC router? how's the response vs the Centroid Acorn 6? I think the main reason why I might still be into the Centroid is that I want to use a rotary (which is standard on my machine) and also add fixed tool mounts as well to make it a 20 tool changer. I need a lot of different carving tools and this would make it super easy and from my understanding the Masso only allows a choice between rotary or fixed and not both. Is this correct?

It's an underpowered and expensive semi real time controller that acts exactly the same as any other pc system with motion controller. Those Masso cannot run in real time and always have the commands in buffer. It's made for the standard user without any knowledge in the field. If you want cheap industrial grade cnc controls try something like the XCMCU 709D or HLCNC 980m. I've built a lot of CNC retrofits for bigger milling machines and lathes, from Pokeys57CNC, ESS, CSMIO IP/x and some others that were running Mach3/4. I've now moved to standalone Fanuc like controllers from china with built in display and proper keypad. They start at about 500 USD, depending on how many axis you need. They are proper 32 bit real time systems without any lag while jogging with mpg, support mpg job control, have full ATC control, Tool library with auto wear measurement and compensation, proper spindle orientation for rigid tapping and supports every axis with separate encoder inputs and even glass scales. You can also run any plc via rs485, so oilers and exotic hydraulic table clamps are no problem to implement. For example, the XCMCU 709D 5 Axis unit is about 500 USD, and has all the above features, almost the same as any MACH4 system when you count all the extra stuff you need. My customers are super happy with those and i no longer need to kill hours on support for obscure errors with mach and motion controllers. I run one of these on a MAHO700 myself and another more sophisticated one from another chinese manufacturer on a CNC with Toolchanger and 64 toolholders. The only problem you have with these is the documentation is basically nonexistent and only includes the most basic stuff in chinese. Nothing for the standard user that needs to have a step by step guide. However, maybe i should open up a webshop and sell these with proper documents, since i know them in and out.

Hi, I like your way of thinking! I was considering a masso for my 8x4 wood cnc table. But I need something simple that works, I was also considering lichuan servo motors. But if you’re interested in helping a fellow nerd, please be in touch! Cheers!

@@jengelbracht Hi, something simple depends on how much you know about what you want to do and how much money you have spend on your machine and its capabilities. The controllers i was talking about require at least in depth knowledge on standard gcode and its variations to understand what they are executing if something goes wrong. That goes for all industrial controls without full graphic programming. The initial setup would be something i would help with you with of course. If you are not going for a professional setup that HAS to work all the time, i can lead you to something more suited for starters.

@@bogeydope3022 thanks for reaching out! Actually I bought a machine but the company went bankrupt in 2015 so they no longer offer support. The machine has a problem with the Z axis(not sure what) and it runs on old B&R components. I’d rather upgrade it to something more of this day and age before I maybe sink a bunch of money into something that’s no longer supported. If you want I can share more info about the machine. Kind regards! Justus

@@jengelbracht So it is a pretty new professional woodworking cnc mill? Can you give me any info on the motion hardware, like what drivers and what kind of motors it uses? Since it is a woodworking machine, there is no positional feedback besides internal servo encoders? You're sure the z axis problem isn't something mechanical? What is the problem with the z axis? Does it use linear rails and within what spec would it run if it was good? What kind of CNC control does it come with? I'm not familiar with woodworking cnc machines, though know of some that i worked with that were marketed as light VMC for aluminum with the exact same layout. Therefore i know what dynamic setup would be needed if you want to run them like intended.

@@bogeydope3022 it’s from 2008, it’s a Colinbus CMR2513. It has B&R servo motors( 8LSA35.E2030D000-0) with internal encoders as far as I know. The servo drivers are B&R too(8V1016.00-2). It runs on a PLC by B&R(x20cp1484). It used to run from a PC with colidrive software. The problem seems the limit switch or encoder. Z AXIS servo drive gives an error after booting. I noticed that the limit switch was not engaged so after removing the servo motor and dropping the Z axis, I bent the limit switch in the correct position again. Booted up the machine and on itself it started to look for the upper end of the axis, triggering the limit switch and resolving the issue. 4 weeks later I moved the machine booted it again, did a homing cycle, and soon after the error returned. Now the machine won’t try to find the limit switch anymore, rendering the machine in a locked state. Hope you can make something of this story, if not, don’t hesitate to ask!

I need to make one of these. Idk where you are located but here in the US the options for compact HydroVac-Ex are limited and overpriced. This is the perfect size to park in tight neighborhoods and get into back yards with "zero" lots lines that are too tight to get a mini excavator into. Thanks for the video... I might have to start making a parts list!

If you wanted to add dust collection, having a replacement pan for the bottom and an air return port at the top would be pretty nice. Then the air will blow dust downward towards the collection, also keeping dust off the linear rails. Dust collection is always a good idea in something with potentially explosive dust.

overall price point is pretty good, its the closest thing I have seen to a real industrial controller. all those PC controllers just dont do it for me, but then I come from siemens and fanuc controllers. If I could get a fanuc controller I would put it on everything. Granted I have not used this controller, but the #1 thing that stops us from buying a controller or machine is the lack of switches and knobs. case in point, I will not buy a haas machine as they are not good for a job shop, mass production yes, but proving out a program on a controller without the ability to operate it without looking is a nogo for me. example, turning flood coolant on/off with a switch while not looking. lowering raising rapids without looking, single cycle, etc..

"You dont have to use PC" is really not a great argument. Most of DIY people and especially professionals have some PC that is not used. Also if you build a PC into a machine you do not place any other software unless its for CNC process so crashing is not a problem. As you pointed out, Masso is also crashing and if you run your system from SSD on PC it will start in just few seconds. I try to find a good argument for purchase of Masso G3 but I cannot find it, GUI is not enough as selling point.

I did, and it developed into a trip down the rabbit hole trying to simply get it hooked up... probably a good choice for someone who is using the system as a "hobby"... but for someone like me, who isn't interested in a "career move", I've opted to throw the Acorn back into the box and going with MASSO. Perhaps my machine was simply requiring more than the Acorn could supply without getting eyeball deep into wiring, macros, etc., which I don't have the time, will, or patience to engage in at this point.

I have loved this idea since I first saw it. What do you think about machining slots in line with the tabs and plug welding them to the right angle edge tabbed plate? Wouldn't that prevent pulling and movement like right angle beads? I am thinking about building my CNC Mill this way once I am dont with my DIY Plasma Cutter.
