Love that you include exercises. I've been working alot with the hexatonic scale recently. I practice by moving a major 7(omit 5) voicing up a (hexatonic scale) degree. It switches between minor and maj7 but sounds amazing when you start the left hand at a different part of the scale, or have it play an entirely diff hexatonic scale.

They're both octatonic subsets which were hallmarks of not only both of their sounds but in general, of early 20th century European composers. So it very well could be a coincidence. But Bartok also had deeply ambivalent feelings towards Stravinsky, seeming to simultaneously appreciate Stravinsky for doing everything that Bartok thought modern music should be doing while also doing it not very well (too much literal repetition and actual quotation for Bartok's liking. He, like most avant-garde composers of the era, also despised Stravinsky's turn to Neoclassicism) So it's not inconceivable to think that Bartok might have made nods to Stravinsky's music to show him how it's done. But again, there's only so many ways you can bunch up notes of the octatonic without the chords starting to sound like each other.
@Keith_Horn

Good insights. The stories behind the music are always fascinating. I love the idea that Bartok may have used a chord like this to show Stravinsky how it's done. Maybe a bit of gentlemen's trash talk.

If you look hard enough, you can probably find the same chord in Classical or Romantic music, since they can be interpreted as D major and Eb major triads with a bunch of suspended notes. It's a similar idea to the 7 note chord in Beethoven's 9th, which is a diminished 7th chord over D minor.

Beautiful harmonies! But two of the chords are not noted correctly (not what you played). The second chord was notated with a G and E (6th) at the bottom, but you played a 7th G to F. Then the last chord was notated with an E octave in the bass, but you played and said it was a 10th from C to E.

@Keith_Horn

You're right - some of his music can be hard to listen to. Some of the string quartets are challenging to the ears. His earlier works are more tonal and arguably more listenable. Maybe you would like Kossuth or Suites 1 and 2.

To me, it doesn't move like a clock going in one direction. From middle C going right to G you have a P5, from C going left to F you have a P5. If you flip the circle with C going right to F or going left to G you have P4. 🤷
@Keith_Horn
@Keith_Horn 24 күн бұрын
I go into more detail in the full video. I argue that because the forward movement of functional harmony (vi-ii-V-I) moves counterclockwise we should flip the circle to reflect this forward movement.

Functionally you get this from the F major 6th diminished scale of chords, where you go to the C# dim7 chord and move the G and Bb up the scale to A and C, borrowing from the F6 chord. Then he just uses the stankiest sounding inversion of that

Maybe this isn't a helpful way of looking at it, but personally, I see those first three chords all as being different levels of tension over the V7 (G7). You can look at the E minor over F minor as a structure from G mix. b2, then G13 as a less tense colour taken from plain G mix., before upping the tension again with a structure taken from (maybe) G super loc. I doubt he thought of it that way though. Like you said, he wrote this with the movement of each voice in mind.

That's a nice way of looking at it. The first chord is almost the whole Gmix b2 scale!
