Good video, I enjoyed it. I've lived in Tulsa since 1955, I remember when the river was a sewer. But the building of Keystone Dam and the Clean Water Act of 1972 really changed the river for the better although it took some time. People think it's bad now? Man, you should have seen it 60 years ago. Sand Springs was dumping all kinds of industrial waste directly into the water. If you tossed a cigarette into the river it would probably catch on fire. I started fishing it a lot between Tulsa and the dam in the 70's and some amazing things happened. The shad came back. Stripers came with them! And the other fish followed, native to the river at one time. Have you caught any sauger? They're in there. Anyway, great job on the long rod! Flyfishing isn't all that popular in Oklahoma, but it sure is effective. I'm thrilled watching your video and the diversity of species. It's still not a place to go and catch dinner, but fishing isn't about eating, it's about having fun and enjoying the outdoors. Maybe I'll see you out there. I'm old and more cautious now about the sudden water level changes and getting stranded out in the river. That river has taken a lot of lives over the years and demands respect. Take care out there and tight lines to ya!

What size streamer are you running? Just got into fly fishing, and trying to figure out what works. I've just got a 5wt rod so I wasn't sure if what you're throwing would be too big for my setup.
@OKflyfishing2 ай бұрын
The Sauger was caught on maybe a size 1 bendback hook and heavier dumbell eyes. That might make casting on a 5 weight not that fun. Most of the other fish were caught on size six or eight streamers with small dumbell eyes which you could totally cast with a five.
@CwayneY2 ай бұрын

@@baronistheone are you just starting out?
@baronistheone2 ай бұрын
@@OKflyfishing yes with waders. FIshed for 60+ years with spinning gear and started fly fishing a couple of years ago in still water from the bank. Tied a few boxes of flies and have accumulated a 3,4,5,6, and 8 wt rods, reels, and lines. Only the 4 and 5 wt rods are nice quality. Picked up the 6 and 8 wt mainly to try and better handle the wind. Mainly trying to decide if the most inexpensive Simms waders at $230 are that much better than $100 waders (breathable stockingfoot).
@OKflyfishing2 ай бұрын
Well. Simms quality may not be what it once was... so no reason to go straight for them. I have two pair of waders I use, Simms G3's and Patagonia Rio Gallegos they are both very nice but I only paid that kind of money because I got great deals on them. If you look around you can find deals I would say buy the best quality you can afford. Check backcountry.com and sierratradingpost.com and ebay. Also some flyshops offer steep discounts I saw Madison River fly co had some good deals on reddington waders the other day. I've heard good things about dryft waders so check them out. Read reviews etc
@@OKflyfishing thanks, that is sort of what I thought. I'll wait for a bargain on quality waders. Btw- thanks for the videos! Very enjoyable and informative about all the species you catch.

I drive down riverside daily and will see guys walking along with some impressive stringers which look like stripers. I've lived here 50 years and have never fished the Arkansas because of poor water quality but apparently the fishing is great. Couple of questions do you do standard tackle fishing and if so would you be willing to take someone with you to learn how to catch some big stripers? Have you or do you ever eat anything you have caught? I know a guy that swares the fish are safe to eat and was bragging about the leg of salmon he ate from there a couple of weeks ago. What are your thoughts?
@OKflyfishing2 ай бұрын
I pretty well just fly fish with very few exceptions, And I do not keep fish. Don't let perceived thoughts on water quality stop you. The Arkansas River has all kinds of cool fish to catch! When you see those guys with the fish stop and ask them, if you fish at all you probably already have the gear already to go after stripers.
@rcsutter15 күн бұрын
I think your buddy might have been pulling your leg a little, there are no salmon in the Ark, never has been, never will be. And salmon don't have legs. But I'd love to sit around a campfire with you guys and have a good laugh! Seriously, it's not a place to catch dinner, but you can have a good time there. Stop by the Red Robin by 101st and Riverside and have the fish and chips after you're done fishing. Next best thing.
