Wow it requires a flight engineer... Russian technology at its best
@vicentefuentes672 жыл бұрын
it is a requirement of the Russian authorities, remember that it is communism, to eliminate the flight engineer, it is to eliminate a job ... here in the USA it happened when the MD-80 series was developed, where the unions demanded that I have a flight engineer ( like the Boeing 727) because of the seating capacity...that's why McDonnell-Douglas sold the first MD-80 in Europe after (I think) three years it was sold in the USA...but don't be fooled, Russia has the technology, what it does not have is democracy.
@johndavolta31242 жыл бұрын
@@vicentefuentes67 but Russia is not technically communist anymore. I just don't understand why they wouldn't use a flight engineer unless they don't have the tech or money to do so

The boarding on the IL-86 was...odd. Instead of boarding straight to the main deck you enter these lower vestibules. There were plans for a "high capacity" version with seats in these lower areas, too but I guess none were built. An odd bird, for sure.

Yup, to facilitate operation in airfields without a lot of supporting ground equipment. it was a very self-reliant plane.
@spider2300010 ай бұрын
The reply above mine is correct. For some of the airfields in the Soviet Union with little or no infrastructure, it was expected that as well as being able to board from a remote stand, people would actually take their luggage on board with them and hand it over at the desk on the lower level, rather than having ground services do it. I don't think it ever really happened so they used the lower level for passengers to hand in their coats and hand luggage.

Hi! It's in the civil aviation institute facility, near the SVO airport (55.985603, 37.442365). Bad for us, that it's not allowed for visitors. Check out the Monino aviation museum, there's a lot of interesting planes.
