I love how there's literally an elevator inside the plane! Air Travel peaked in the 1970s!

The boarding on the IL-86 was...odd. Instead of boarding straight to the main deck you enter these lower vestibules. There were plans for a "high capacity" version with seats in these lower areas, too but I guess none were built. An odd bird, for sure.

Yup, to facilitate operation in airfields without a lot of supporting ground equipment. it was a very self-reliant plane.
@spider230003 ай бұрын
The reply above mine is correct. For some of the airfields in the Soviet Union with little or no infrastructure, it was expected that as well as being able to board from a remote stand, people would actually take their luggage on board with them and hand it over at the desk on the lower level, rather than having ground services do it. I don't think it ever really happened so they used the lower level for passengers to hand in their coats and hand luggage.

Wow!!! I wondered if there were any aircraft that had an elevator on board! Do you know if there are any other manufacturers of aircraft besides Ilyushin that make/made aircraft with an elevator on board? Are there 2 elevators next to each other? Does the aircraft have 2 elevators total? Does the elevator have no internal door (car door) or is there a car door, but the elevator will run with it open? Is the elevator designed to be used in flight, or only when the aircraft is on the ground, or only when the aircraft is stationary? Were the elevators used by members of the public, or only the crew? Where was this video filmed? Is this at a museum, or other location that the public might be able to visit?
@2ndLakeProductions4 жыл бұрын
I think a few larger airliners have had elevators. Don't quote me, but the 747, DC-10, L1011 Tristar, and probably a few others.
@pablodescamisado4 жыл бұрын
elevators were used to deliver food from the kitchen on the lower deck to the cabin. it's not a museum, and it's not open for public to visit. it's in Moscow airport, planes just stand there for learning purposes.
@GlamorousTitanic214 жыл бұрын
@upanddownadventures the L-1011 Tristar has an elevator but it was mainly used for transporting food from the galley below the passenger areas. If you think about it it was a stroke of genius to put the galley below the passengers and use the space where it could have been for more seats.
