First - THANK YOU to GMT Games for taking a leap of faith on this game and then continuing to support it. There is simply NOTHING else like the way it makes you feel. Second - THANK YOU to Ben Hull to inviting others in to share this baby and contribute to bring it to the next level. Third - THANK YOU to the team that was compiled to give this much love to the game because so many more people need to experience this game. Couldn't be happier, or more excited, for the deluxe edition.

There was some talk there about how French military units function. Is that a hint that some future volume will cover a French Company? That would be pretty much an auto-buy for me 😅
@Shonai_Dweller20 күн бұрын
Everything is a hint at future content (or, in prototype form) yeah. What we actually get into production is yet to be seen. ;)

Such a brilliant system. Tne narrative generated from it is excellent. The notion or comment about the onset of dread for a piece of cardboard is spot on. Really felt that in Heartbreak Ridge.

Is Battle of the Bulge expansion still compatible with the Deluxe Edition? I got it about a year ago on clearance while waiting on the deluxe edition.
@Shonai_Dweller22 күн бұрын
Yes. Bulge is fully Deluxe compatible (says so right there on the GMT website). 3rd edition rules were already in a fairly solid form by the time we were working on final development for Bulge so we made sure everything was worded in a way that matched the new rules. The only thing you'll find is a couple of references to rules numbered as they were in the 2nd edition rulebook (though the rule name itself has remained the same in each case I think).

FoF was actually one of the first games I played, so Ben saying newbies can get it because they have no preconcieved notions really hits with me. I learned it has maybe my 4th or 5th war game and I absolutely love it.

OK, just to clarify, if I bought the new Deluxe Edition, Volume III is a separate standalone expansion, correct?
@Shonai_Dweller24 күн бұрын
FoFIII is a completely new standalone volume, yes. Expect a big, big box like FoF Deluxe but with funny spelling in the Field Manuals. ;)

does GIMP have "step" recording? That way as long as each edit to the image is going to be the same you just hit "go" and it'll do all the steps pretty much instantly.

Still haven't found a competent teaching video for this game yet and for a first time player of the coin series most people are going to need that .......learning the coin system with your only tool being the rule book is going to take the game out of the reach of most people who might be interested. It takes a well above average person in intelligence to get these type of games sans a good instructional video.

It's easy to be a fan of Mark Herman as I am, in large part because he's such an intelligent and interesting person, and an outstanding game designer. This was an insightful and enjoyable interview, even amidst his frequent references to "teaching at the graduate level". One small note: there's not a lot of evidence to suggest that Mao Zedong played what is known as 'Go'. According to his associates and others who worked with him, Mao spent much of his leisure time reading and walking, with the rare game of mahjong, often with female assistants. Playing 'Go' and how it reveals Chinese stratagems is one of those myths about Mao that's been spread about and accepted as fact when the historical record indicates otherwise.
@markherman50Ай бұрын
Thanks for the input, sorry I annoyed you, but in English I have two books written about GO (Wei Chi) and strategy that is the source of my information that Mao played Wei Chi and his translated writings do not have Mahjong references but what I stated. If you have better information or can supply a translated source that differs I would love to see it. As an aside, I am intentionally 'gaslighting you here', my female Chinese graduate students and I often spoke about their passion for Mahjong and how each of their local hometown regions had different versions on how to score. Interesting game that I know how to play, but without any skill.
@chinapoliticsfromtheprovin6133Ай бұрын
@@markherman50 Thank you for your reply and, more importantly, your game designs. My sense is that the reference by Wei Chi authors to Mao playing the game is much as means of marketing their work as anything else. Mao's writings, in the original Chinese and translations of military writings, contain the odd reference to Wei Chi largely as a means of conveying his meaning to those less conversant with strategy. He knew what the game involved to be sure, but he appears to believed that the less educated conscripts and even some of his NCOs and officer corps would understand his thoughts on military strategy if couched in terms they were familiar with. When I have asked Chinese military personnel in the past (when it was more possible to do so) if Mao used Wei Chi as an influence, everyone who had a view said that they'd never heard that and certainly were never taught that. What I suspect is happening in some of the writings one encounters is that some folks see a connection from Wei Chi to Mao's guerilla strategy and then assuming because he is Chinese, conclude that surely he must have been a master at it. But Mao's main English language translator has written that Mao was lousy at and largely uninterested in games, especially cards. His personal physician wrote that while Mao played the odd game of mahjong, he largely did so with young female assistants for other purposes. Thank you again.

Great interview! I have an idea that Pericles might be a good basis for a 4-player 2-sided American Revolution game, as a counter to Liberty or Death, the COIN game. Take Pericles, where one side is the American Patriots (the Continental Army, militias, Congress) and British Sympathizers (pro-American elements such as certain Parliament members, merchants, etc) against the British military (army, navy) and American Loyalists. Issues could be campaign plans, foreign diplomacy, politics, and such.

I note your update in the email from gene about the games going through development, which is a needed area of focus as too many games are languishing there without progress for far too long ! However, one game that is very materially overdue is the errata pack for Mr. President. This is quite egregious as this was scheduled a lot earlier. Overall, you do need to move games that have crossed the P500 threshold to the printer a LOT faster, and this is a BIG issue in my opinion. I appreciate your post about being truthful and accurate, but you need to dedicate more resources to this.
