There's a viaduct on the M8 in Glasgow that's taking 5 years to repair (2021-2026). During those 5 years there are long tailbacks as four lanes of traffic have to merge into two. Journey times are considerably extended. I bet the Royal Engineers would have got the job done a lot more quickly.

what role in the RE is best if you wanted to be an infantryman but know you should pick a trade
@av4rici0u5528 күн бұрын
There is no best trade, everyone likes different things, if you are wanting to do infantry stuff just don't pick geo or armoured engineer.

@av4rici0u5528 күн бұрын
@Jacks-g6w all of them, everyone goes through the combat engineer training before their trade training.

And i can guarantee you that 95% of these people lack an engineering degree and have no clue what a natural logarithm or a vector is.

Aye, most of these mere mortals will learn their trades through an apprenticeship. So what? I guarantee that most snobby twats who harrumph about engineering degrees wouldn't last a day on a construction site.

@bigmacntings74513 ай бұрын
yes it's still a thing....The swim test is actually pretty basic. Anyone of a certain age will remember the swimming proficiency medals they gave out at school. What these guys are doing as training would be basically in the same ballpark as gold/level 2 lifesaver.Not really that advanced but necessary as training as a "just in case" scenario. sort of minimum level for anybody. The specialist guys blow this stuff out of the water...my old swimming instructor(at age 10) went to train frogmen for the forces,so I got quite a bit of a drilling when I was younger.
@bigmacntings74513 ай бұрын
I remember that old test quite well in swimming class....tread wate fully clothed...dive down to retrieve the brick, take our trousers off, tie a knot in the leg and exhale in it to get buoyancy for the journey up!!!! that's memories!!

Harding failed, EOKA won, 300 men against an empire. Enosis wasn't achieved as the ultimate aim, instead independence. EOKA were not terrorists they were freedom fighters, as was Nelson Mandella, himself a freedom fighter. The British and Harding were good at creating divide and rule - during the EOKA campaign by the Greek Cypriots the majority population of the island, the Turkish Cypriot minority were turned against the Greek Cypriots by the British. EOKA were heroes, example March 1957, Grigorios Afxentiou finally burnt alive by the British in a cave as he would not surrender, after hours of battle. Street names were named after him.

Always remember being sent to the Grenadier Guards to install some comms for them on excercise. The fellas were all digging trenches whilst the CO, Major Sir double barrelled surname, was sitting in a deckchair, with his shooting stick, and two spaniels, directing operations, via a very subserviant sergeant 😂😂😂
@SentinelSays3 ай бұрын
About right for the Grenadiers. We used to call them 'The dukes and duchesses of mincing around'. The men and the NCO's were sound enough, the officers spent all their time discussing complete waffle and having a hard on for the storied history of the regiment. As a nco to officer in another regiment, I felt as out of place as a fart in a colander surrounded by them.
