My MMO addiction started similarly to yours, but I think I was a little older. When I was 19, my friend introduced me to a game called Redmoon Online. It was a Korean isometric MMO in a modern day setting. What really captured me was the level cap: 1,000. It was a total grind-fest typical of the Korean MMO genre. The US servers were shut down due to hacking around 2004, but the game has lived on as Redmoon Classic (now Redmoon Advanced) and Redmoon 2 (spinoff passion project). In 2004, that left my friend and I with a huge void and we were immediately on the hunt for a new MMO. WoW had just released, but was far too cartoony and childish looking for our tastes. Enter: Lineage 2. A new hardcore, open PvP, grind fest that looked absolutely gorgeous compared to anything out at that time. I remember I built my first ever gaming PC (AMD FX5500, 6800GT video card and a massive 4 GB of RAM) just to play it at max settings. Literally about a month and a half of pay at the time just to see Lineage in all its glory. We played on the Devianne US server, ultimately becoming part of an awesome clan I still remember fondly to this day. We made so many memories; late night drunk leveling sessions with our friends from Europe, raids, mass PvP battles with rival clans, and castle sieges were the norm. In the end we became part of the leading server alliance with ownership of both Aden and Giran. On a retail server, this was such a huge deal to be part of for me and we had access to so many things. The golden era peaked out around Chronicle 5 for me and things started going downhill from there. To this day, I have chased the nostalgia on so many low rate Interlude servers, but will never re-live those glory days of endless fun, leveling and gear progression.

Shortly after this game released, my best friend gave me a burnt copy of the game and urged me to try it. I had never played an RPG before and I was immediately in love with this game. There were other games that I have similar strong feeling for, but nothing compares with gothic. There is just nothing like that. When G1 and G2 came out, they were huge in Germany. Almost everyone who was into computer gaming played it and those who hadn't were anoyed because everyone said they really had to give it a try. Sadly this game didn't have the impact on the game industry it deserved to have.

This is my favorite game too. Here are my thoughts: I did not have problems with anything. Maybe the animations could be better. I need to see more to tell. I feel like people nit-pick too much for the sake of having some sort of opinion. Don't forget how jank and flawed the game was. It's not a bad thing to have flaws. I loved most of the flaws of the original. Animations are a pet-peeve of mine though. So many high budget games get this wrong where gothic 1&2 got it right. I hate animations that look like a drunk person under water. To understand what I mean compare tekken (bad) to any 2D fighter (good). We don't know if the game will be good, but one thing is for sure, even if it's crap I will still try my best to enjoy it, because it's GOTHIC.

This week I tried the Gothic Remaster, not to be confused with the Remake. In the remaster the animations for combat are different(also the mechanics), also walking has one animation for everyone. At first I was not feeling the combat but after an hour the Gothic magic made me look past that and now I am having a blast. The game runs super smoothly, has some quality of life features that make the experience worth while.

We should get rid of patents altogether. It's pretty clear that the system failed at protecting small businesses. At this point it's just another tool that aids megacorps in enforcing stagnation and maximizing profits.

I am more drawn toward indie games more than games by well-known developers because I think they have a lot more passion and they just want to create a fun and enjoyable game. They were inspired by older games they played, but they brought their own unique creativity to them. I enjoyed games like Stardew Valley, Unchained Echoes, and Valheim. These games cost a fraction of what other games cost and I got much more enjoyment out of them. I don't spend more than $30 for a game.

Software patents in general are pretty stupid. I'm not sure if it's really any one thing that has squelched innovation, but developers not being willing to take chances is definitely a big one. If it takes you 8 years and $230 million to build it, I can kind of understand that viewpoint, but it still reeks. This is why if you really want to see innovation these days, you have to look at more indie games.

Perhaps the reason nobody makes new and interesting games anymore is because a small but VERY loud group of gamers will try their absolute hardest to tear down your game because it isn't something that's more of the same game they have loved playing forever. It's hard to try something new when just existing is enough to ignite a firestorm.
