I know I'm a bit late but I have a theory about what happened to these lost versions 1. The Wii version must have been very early in the game's development because I heard the Wii version was turned into Sonic colors probably some time around early 2009 similar to what happened to the Wii version of 06 because that turned into Secret rings so there probably wasn't any work done on the Wii version if at all my theory is that it would have been handled by Dimps the people who made the Wii version of unleashed and probably would have been similar to that. 2. The DS version was most likely made around the time colors DS was being made and probably would have been a rush stile game similar to colors DS The reason why it was cancelled was most likely because the 3DS was announced around the time the game being developed so they probably thought why put it on the old system when we could put it on the new system which would be coming out the next year the same year Sonic Generations would come out. 3. The PSP version was scrapped because it was the end of it's life and they probably thought it wouldn't sell well so they scrapped it in favor of the 3DS version because the prototype that they found was probably a very early version of the 3DS version and they took that version and took some ideas they had for the DS version and combined it together to make the 3DS version. But that's just my theory and I would like to know what any theorys any of you all have.

I still remember getting Pokemon stadium at release, seeing all the 3D assets thinking " surely all future mainline titles will be released on N64..." how naive I was. Then they released Gold and Silver on the gameboy and I was soooo disappointed, killed my interest in the franchise for years. Theory: the DS, PSP and 3DS version are just ports of each other, so it was just the same thing with a fresh code of paint.

The N64DD should've either been bundled with the console itself at launch. Or, the N64 should've been a Zip Disk media console to begin with(maybe even add in SNES backwards compatbility); only double the storage data from 64MGBytes to 128MGBytes! Even manufacturing two 128MGByte Zip disks would've been cheaper than an 8MGByte cartridge; even at the time! If load times were a concern, they should've ever so slightly increased the RAM from 4 MGBytes to 6MGBytes(then making a 6MGBytes RAM expansion Pak doubling it to 12MGBytes), and increase the CPU clock speed ever so slightly from 93MH to 100MH!

generations is my favorite sonic game. planet wisp is one of the best levels in generations i think sa2 is mid sonic free riders is my second favorite sonic game.

The PSP version became the 3DS version and the DS version became Colors DS

Would be pretty cool if a build of the Wii version leak somewhere. The PSP version is problably the 3DS version with worse graphics and less details. The DS on the other hand is much more weak, would be problably a “reskin” of Sonic Rush like the Sonic Colors.

I doubt that the DS version of Generations had anything to do with the 3DS version of it at all, actually. I'm guessing that they could have never gotten the DS version close to being able to do what the 3DS version did. Personally, I think any effort put towards giving console mechanics to a Sonic DS game was put towards Sonic Colors, which contains mechanics like the stomp that were never in the previous DS games. Also, I would imagine they would have taken advantage of the dual screen real estate for any Sonic Generations on the DS if they could. I'm guessing that the 3DS version is actually based off the lost PSP version, thanks to the leaked mushroom hill zone assets and the more graphical capable system PSP allowing the game to take much better advantage of the widescreen aspect ratio that both the PSP and the 3DS has. This would also complain the almost complete lack of real use of the bottom screen of the 3DS version.
