I've put off drawing comics for a few years, thinking I needed to "get better". I finally made the jump and drew a 16 page comic for a contest. This was massively helpful for me, but I missed the deadline which demotivated me so much I barely drew for the next year. Earlier this year I tried again, and created two comics--one 9 page story, and a 6 page one. The amount of progress I made in paneling and overall art, without even doing a whole lot of practice outside these projects, just proved to me that the best way to get "good enough" is to actually draw comics. I still need to study things like anatomy and other fundamentals, but doing so while also making comics is far more motivating than just studying until I'm "good enough". It doesn't feel like a far away dream anymore. It feels attainable. and if you need it, try to find a contest like The Silent Manga Award if it motivates you and just start making stuff.

@ookami5329 I'm so sorry! It's terrible when you had the expectation to post and it's too late- but ultimately- you made something! I think that notion is way more important And totally! Practical experience doing the thing is priceless, and I'm happy you managed to get back into art again despite the loss I hear you about the study until you get good thing- after years of doing that it becomes a bit tedious knowing you could have been working toward something in that time. I agree that working on both simultaneously is the best way to build up skill and exp I didn't realise how much a contest would help me either, but it really got me into the mentality to finally finish something longer form/work on a script etc. It's a good initiator lol Thank you for your comment, I think you touch on many things people tend to struggle with

@@aeryma no need to feel sorry, I’m actually really stoked to make comics again after I restarted. It was helpful that I actually managed to finish the first comic and send to another contest. I didn’t win, but I got some great feedback from professional editors which really motivated me to try again with my other two entries. I’ve got some commission work to finish and then I can get back to comic creation. Hopefully this encourages other people to not give up and keep drawing even when it’s hard to stay motivated

I've always had a broad range of interests, and not all of them are in the artistic realm, so I always feel like I'm being pulled in a dozen different directions at once. Comics are something I've been wanting to get back into as I used to draw silly little stick-man comics back in grade school. Nothing substantial, of course, and I'd want to step things up with a more Manga-inspired art style, but my main issue now... I am a terrible writer. It's a very good journey to not let the creation of your art stand in the way of the story unfolding. I'm glad to hear you have come to the realisation that makes you more able to focus on things of that are most important. You make a very important point with contemplating whether the details that the perfectionist tend to, like an overthinker renumerate endlessly with no real progress really are essential. Efficiency is not only a time subject, but also an optimisation of your art style that conveys what you want to express most efficiently. And I'd imagine that is also the progress you have, where the expression comes first, then the "fleshing" out. While looking at other artists can be a good inspiration and a great learning curve, I, personally think it is a good idea to not constantly compare yourself with others. It's your story, your art, and the more it is you, the more other artists will look at yours and think to themselves, "Oh, that is actually really cool, I love that line". Having said that, it is important that this will not be the operator for you. We can never satisfy everyone, but we will always satisfy someone. Lastly, now also apply the same liberation to your story telling, else you have just moved your perfectionism from the art creation to the story telling, and we wouldn't want that, now would we, ha :). Great video, Aeryma.
@aeryma
@aeryma Ай бұрын
@janniknielsen9292 yeah of course the views in the video can overflow into the story and many other aspects of creation. @amusingkiwi9586 I haven't looked into the physical copy side, but I guess it would depend on what size print you want. E.g. A4 is 2480 x 3508 pixels so I'd say around 3000ish+px is a good target to aim for width wise, and the length would I guess be the equivalent value- (so maybe 3200x4800 for 1 page? But you'd obviously need to modify the panels for the prints dimensions when you convert it over) And for print we'd need >300dpi Unfortunately I don't know much about it yet, but maybe some day I'll do more research! Long video, very nice. It was really great hearing your personal experiences, and how you have dealt with your obstacles, pulling through, all the while you have also learned the lessons of everything in moderation helps the greater whole, not lest your mental health and body. Regarding the schedules, all depending on how you are and how many hours per day you'd in general like to put into it, I like to think each day has it's personal moods and creative energies in regards to when in the day it is. If this is a somewhat constant in you, maybe you should split the day into different zones. In example mornings, noon, mid day, evening, and night. I, myself is definitely not a routine person, but some people thrive in that, so maybe assign different tasks to these chosen zones, depending on your creative energy in that given time period. It also makes everything more structured as a basis and helps you direct your energies in a specific area. Glad you are also giving thoughts to promotion and marketing. It is an area many artists struggle with.

@janniknielsen9292 2 ай бұрын
@@aeryma Yeah, build around those routines and constants you have, like if you have a set schedule for physical activity and anything that isn't directly related to your creative process. For me personally, the closer I get to evenings and nights the more reflective and cerebral I am, and my curve from mornings go upwards, which means my planning phase is very good in the mornings, and then productiveness is a bell curve, where I try to change to something else entirely when it is past peak. Also as you rightfully added, that doing something else entirely not only is a necessity for our personal wellbeing, but it is also indirectly good for our creative process, taking breaks.

@janniknielsen9292 fair enough, I think it's good to not be dependent entirely on routine and have some spontaneous flexibility. I should probably mention that you could find much better advice from more veteran Comic Artists, though this is how I did it with my recent story. I guess I didn’t mention everything; of course, you can use your everyday life, your dreams, shower thoughts, etc. to explore more ideas- it all depends. If you struggle with these simple methods, then writing may help you. I’d personally love to explore Miriam Bonastres mind of ideas, idk how she does it errytime! ;-; Hope this was helpful though- I’m not much of a teacher, I don’t have that much wisdom, but I’ll try to share stuff here and there that may be useful, taken with a hint of salt. TBH I would love to try focus more on animatics as well since I’m naturally more quiet, but they take a while, and I have to sacrifice time on my comic to make them :x Maybe one day~

Yes, we are lol. I guess this is also up to what the artists intentions are, so it's up to interpretation. E.g. some people work on short 1 page 6 panel comics, and others long form with 60+ pages I guess I'm addressing the latter. Though, you're right in a sense, artists can work on whatever resolution/size they wish, if it gives them the outcome they want, it's all good 👍 If resizing as you go works, that's perfect- you do what you find works for you c: We should all just experiment and see how we like working/what quality we want for the art in the end. Technically nothing is considered 'wrong', but a personal choice Sorry if you didn't find it useful, this was based on my own experience and to help those who struggled with similar problems 🙂

How do you come up with story ideas?

I answered on your other comment, but for me what helps the most is consuming more stories from different media. Manga, Webcomics, Games, etc. Then I think about my interests, what genres I like, character personalities, etc. I try to think about how to combine the key elements of what I enjoy and fuse them together somehow- into a story I'd actually like to read myself Ideas also just sometimes come out of nowhere- I think it just depends on the person. I'm far from an expert, but I'd suggest looking on KZbin for some tips from Writers if you continue having trouble Stories are tough though, dw if it doesn't come naturally. It is something we develop over time, and we may need to get through some bad story ideas to find the good ones

You're not wrong- a well thought out and cohesive story is hard to achieve. I think what helped me the most (not that I'm good at it), was to consume more stories from other artists Comics, Games and other media can serve as a good foundation to inspire you. I'd start by thinking about what your interests are, stories you like, characters you enjoy- make a list and try to build connections between them Hope it helps c:
