Great convo guys! The "image" discussion can't help but remind me of the Robert Palmer "Addicted to Love" video, with all the models "playing" the instruments behind him. Or even George Michael's "Freedom" where he intentionally destroyed the relics from his "Faith" days.

I preordered that rush box set because the OG copies start at $200 each. And these ones weren’t as popular so i doubt they will keep them in print🤷‍♂️ was just happy to have a chance to own them.

@@spinzvinyl I used to have all of the half-speed mastered LPs too. I remember buying them in the 1980s not really sure what they were but they were different and they were Journey haha. I left my albums down in Houston when I moved to Fort Worth in 1991 and I've been trying to locate them at the family house ever since about 2000. I went down and dug through everything in mid 2024 when we were selling the house and I only found about 50 albums stored in my old room. But only one of them was my Journey half-speed mastered albums and it was the Dream After Dream album. All of those other albums and especially the Journey half-speed mastered ones we're not there anymore. I had about 400 to 500 LPs down there and I'm guessing some family member (that won't admit) it threw them away or gave them away? Bummer!!!

I'm part way through the vid but will comment on popsike. It was the go to site from 2003 to the early 10s if you wanted to know if a certain record had value. When I joined Discogs in the mid 00s it was purely for hip hop. It obviously started as a dance orientated site and I think hip hop was the next thing to start getting listed. Rock, soul, jazz etc just wasn't on there at that point. So some dealers were starting to use popsike to check out their rarities to see what they should price it at. Discogs just wasn't on the radar of your typical dealer selling rock etc whilst obviously now it has become the go to site. Great resource but very negative with regard to finding bargains in the wild. Cheers Nige

I stopped buying hip hop in 1993 which kinda coincided with the explosion of gangster rap. I bought NWA, Eazy E, King Tee, Ice T, Ice Cube etc records up to that point and and loved them. However, I was always more into east coast hip hop and preferred the rap style of those MCs. I like my hip hop to have obscure samples as well so the little I heard in the 90s as gangster rap became more prominent didn't do anything for me musically. I even dumped the likes of Too Shorts Born To Mack lp and Tupacs first 12" release in a charity shop in the 00s as I just didn't want them in my collection. Each to their own of course. Good topic guys....cheers Nige
@spinzvinyl
@spinzvinyl 11 күн бұрын
Hey Nige! Thanks for sharing your story. Yeah, I hear you on that. A lot of it for me has to do with what else is going on in my life and my mood at any given time (just like anything else). You raise a great point, that I hadn't actually considered, about the kind of sampling that was happening in the 80s vs the 90s. I think it goes back to that subtlety I was talking about. I too have dumped records that were just sort of "tainting" my collection lol. Over time my collection has gone through many stages of curation and is a pretty good snapshot of my life's history and the things that have brought me joy. Thanks for watching, my friend!

Most of the time Amazon ships LPs in dedicated mailers but their box sets too often do not. What happens to the records once you’ve returned them?
@spinzvinyl
@spinzvinyl 11 күн бұрын
Oh, interesting. I don't think I've ever purchased a box set from Amazon. It definitely seems like they have tried to be more economical with their packaging, while still being thoughtful about fragile items. Of course they don't always get it right. Hopefully they continue to develop their packaging to make sure that things like box sets stay safe.
@hkraytai
@hkraytai 11 күн бұрын
@ I have had a few box sets from Amazon shipped without any protection recently just the set in that huge box. The recent Pharoah Sanders box and Sonny Rollins Go West. There has been others but I don’t recall the titles. Some LPs arrived in that big box nothing else. I take a chance because I can return them. I just wonder if the returns go to some landfill. I assume Amazon does not have boxes for odd sizes records.
@spinzvinyl
@spinzvinyl 11 күн бұрын
@hkraytai it’s a great question. I have no idea. I have received items from Amazon (not records) where I thought, hmmm, was this returned by someone else? Actually, have you seen where they sell returned items by the pallet? I’ve seen KZbin videos where people buy random return pallets from Amazon and then resell them. It’s usually like 20 toasters or 50 hairdryers or something like that. I wonder if Records end up on a pallet just like that? As far as I know, it’s totally random and you don’t get to know what kind of merchandise will be on the pallet you purchase.

Super important topic, loved the takes! If I return a record from an online sale, I notify the seller with the tracking ID a day after I ship it back to them (I use my 'humdinger (Humminguru haha) and even clean it for them). In this manner I communicate that I am 1.) serious 🧐 & 2.) willing to swallow $10-12 shipping costs and they are not out any $. It was my risk and my responsibility to cover...never had a seller refuse after dozens of unfortunate purchases.
@spinzvinyl
@spinzvinyl 16 күн бұрын
All great points. I always send them back cleaned. Kudos to you for picking up the return shipping. Glad to hear sellers have been flexible rather than giving you problems for a return. That has mostly been my experience as well, with only 2 exceptions that I can think of. What you're describing is "reasonable business practices"! It's good to remember that this is the rule rather than the exception! Thank you, my friend!

50 mins in but gonna have to return to this tomorrow as bedtime here in the UK! So many classic records guys... awesome stuff. From the early/mid 80s and to early 90s, they all have a special place in my heart...very much in my DNA as well. As much as I love the earlier 80s stuff when sampling came into its own circa 87 the art form truly entered the golden age. You need to check out Audio Two Jason. Milk D was a superb MC...unique off kilter style. You need all of the EPMD and Eric B & Rakim lps as well. I will return with further comments tomorrow 🙂. Cheers Nige

Some of my recommendations would be Ultramagnetic MCs Critical Beatdown, Jungle Brothers Straight Out The Jungle, Main Source Breaking Atoms, KAOS Courts In Session, Lord Finesse Funky Technician, Paris The Devil Made Me Do It. Excellent episode! At last someone talking about hip hop on wax. There is so much content about sound quality, mastering and pressings in rock and jazz. I just wish there was someone talking about that in hip hop. Last year was hip hop 50th with represses and special editions of classic hip hop albums, but no one is talking about the sound quality on hip hop OG's vs repress. My feeling is that little detail is done from record companies when it comes to reissues in hip hop.

Great chat guys. It's intriguing to hear the discussion on 80s r&b/soul etc. I loved Thriller but very little beyond that. As soon as I heard hip hop in 1984 that was it. It consumed me so much I just didn't entertain the kind of artists you were showing. It absolutely had to be rap and I turned my back on anything that had singing on it. Just a naive young kid stubbornly stuck in his lane. Thankfully late 80s sampling in hip hop resulted in me getting into something other than hip hop. Btw People pay big money for modern soul or boogie predominantly from the 80s but it's obviously stuff way under the radar on indie labels. I know zero about the genre other than I know there's some large sums paid for it. Cheers Nige

Thank's Nige! Yeah, I hear you on that. It's easy to kind of get locked in on something and just ride it out. It's like if you love chicken parmesan, why would you have something else on the menu when chicken parm is your favorite? lol. There's an added layer (at least for me) which is, if you didn't grow up with it, it's going to be that much harder to get into it later. I would say, start with the big, or most popular, tunes. Then when you find something you like, ease in a little deeper on that catalog. Here's a playlist I just added to the descr of the video: tinyurl.com/80sFunkRnBSoul

Jason Spinz … He could be the most important (non-jazz) artist of the last 60 years. Greatest hits are always a great place to start. I was once a non- Dylan person myself. Here are some suggested titles across his career: - Times Are A Changing - Highway 61 - Blonde On Blonde - Basement Tapes - Blood on the Tracks - Infidels - Love & Theft - Murder Ballads No one (not even Neil Young … well maybe Neil) has a 60+ year track record of touring, creating, recording, writing - absolutely crazy. I mean he is 83 and still vital, working constantly and creating albums that are at a very high level. Absolute genius.

Thanks, Jeff. I'm definitely warming up to Dylan. I'm making a real concerted effort to understand his music. Not even his music, more his performances of his own creations. Having seen A Complete Unknown and now watching multiple documentaries, I'm ready to give him another shot. I love his story and don't dispute his impact culturally and on the world of music, I've just (like I said) never been able to appreciate his performances of his own music. Thanks so much for the song recommendations! I will add them to the playlist! Can't wait for the Greatest Hits records to arrive! Maybe soon I'll be joining the ranks of Dylan lovers everywhere! :D

I did return to it in the 00s but mainly to buy stuff from the 80s and early 90s I missed first time round. A fuzzy psych record or dirty funk record and who mastered it is the least of my concerns. 1000s of records out there I'd prioritise over a new Beatles remaster even though I love the Beatles.
