Arcante Trickster Rogue -You get Cunning Action Hide, which makes you attack with advantage. -If there’s nothing to hide behind and you’re unable to use that. That’s where Arcane Trickster comes in. -At 3rd level you get one non enchantment or illusion spell, so you can get the Find Familiar spell, and you familiar can provide advantage through the help action. What about duel wielding identical weapons with an ambidextrous character... ie no 'off' hand. DnD has never dealt with this well. Always one weapon gets a negative of some sort or less attacks. Been home brewing solutions to this since AD&D...

Fake dual wielding. No fighting styles. Just a second weapon and Menacing, replace the bonus dual wield attack with a Menacing effect. Doesn't suffer penalties for being a second weapon and targets insight which is rare on stat blocks.

I think a lot of people are way over hyping the change. You’re doing slightly less damage than previously (due to one of the attacks still having to be using a light weapon when taking the dual wielder feat) and no longer gaining a +1 to AC. Of course, the primary beneficiary of the change is ranger because they can hunters mark and offhand attack on the same round, though keep in mind they’re still loosing the AC bonus and can no longer dual wield longswords or scimitars, which is a pretty big flavor-nerf in my opinion :/

I think what they could do is just make it to where the duel wielder feat will allow this feature to work with weapons that aren't light.

@TheWanderersWit2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that pick had me re-reading Shadow Blade to see if I'd missed something. Nope. Even with upcasting it's a problem because it's relying on your Dex score for a to-hit, and if you built to max Dex, by level 11 you're like 4.5 average damage points over the resourceless 3 Eldritch Blast hits you could have had. And given the need to use a spell slot and concentration for it as opposed to almost anything else the Warlock could be casting and concentrating on I have no idea why this spell ended up on the list.
@2MeterLP2 жыл бұрын
Concentration spells that require you to be in melee range in general are just terrible. Especially with caster HP and AC. Shadow blade is only for arcane tricksters and eldritch knights.

I have some concerns about some methods. - With Critical Initiative, isn't going first already an advantage? - With Re-Rolling initiative, what about the "untill the start/end" turn abilities, which could get wildly inconsistent? - With rolling Initiative for actions, it could allow combatants who had to announce their action first at disadvantage, since if they announce a "slow" action, it's enemies could choose their action to negate their action and made them waste resources?
@cfalkner10122 жыл бұрын
I respect the desire to come up with a more intuitive system, but there are some big problems with all of these that will require other solutions. The speed factor will ironically slow down combat a LOT, and will require more tweaks to subclasses like War Magic and Chronurgy Wizard, Assassin Rogue, Gloomstalker Ranger. The same subclasses will be effected by side initiative. I’m not saying that there is no way to make these adaptations, but as with all homebrew, it requires cascading fixes. Ultimately, the 5e initiative system isn’t perfect, but it’s the one that the game was designed around.
@leodouskyron56712 жыл бұрын
The first system was 3D6 roll down the sheet in order. Allowing you to order your roll was a very common table rule to prevent people making a lot of characters and scrapping them. The second one was 4D6 and where you like. (Table rule became official) Third was in the book unearthed arcana that let you have dice pools based on your desired class in each attribute (so if you wanted to be a Wizard you could have like 7 or 8 roll and choose but for say intelligence but only 3 for strength) The standard array and point buy came about later and are effectively identical in that you can make the standard array in point buy. (The idea being you have everyone starting with fairly equivalent Stats) Other systems include: Roll 2d6 + 6 (slightly more powerful PCs) Roll 4D6 and Reroll 1 once (slightly powerful then above) Roll D20 (totally chaotic PC Stats) Roll 24 arrange in groups of three as desired. (Slightly better then standard array but really FUN). (From my memory and worth what you paid for it😂 )

I like that last one. You can give yourself a high score in your primary stat for mechanical purposes and a low score in your dump stat for the lulz.

Yea, Find Familiar is great, but I would assert that Bless is the best. It is a first-level spell that remains absolutely fantastic at EVERY level. It's cumulative effect if cast early can turn a combat or save a party at level 20, and that with just a first level casting! The consequence of a 1d4 bonus to hit rolls and a 1d4 bonus to saves in a "bounded accuracy" system is gargantuan, vastly outstripping the power and utility of tiny one-shot spells that affect one character for one turn or anything else. Bless and Bane by the way are not equal, in that Bane allows the enemy to resist with a saving throw which makes it a LOT less useful than a guaranteed buff.
@ConManDnD2 жыл бұрын
I will not argue that Bless is an amazing spell and I have seen put to great use. I chose Find Familiar over how versatile it is. I put Bane and Bless together due to their similarities but would agree Bless is the better of the two because of the guarantee with it

I play a gloomstalker. It’s quite fun and pairs well with the drow race I chose too. It also pairs well with the module I chose to play in which is Icewind Dale. Since it’s Arctic that means there is very little daylight so gloomstalker can take full advantage of his ability to hide as well as his darkvision being expanded. I also made him dex based which is nice because it means he can take full advantage of his abilities. I did add a level of rogue to provide some expertise in stealth and perception. Even on a 1 he rolls decently high now. I quite enjoy playing this character and this class. I might play another sometime though I’ll have to change some things up to make it work as a new character all together.

Sickening Radiance is OP for a warlock that has taken the eldritch invocation of Repelling Blast. You cast Sickening Radiance onto a group of enemies, and when they move to get out of the radius, you blast them back in to stack the exhaustion. Put six levels of exhaustion onto anything (Tarasque, Tiamat, anything) and it is dead. No saving throws on the exhaustion, no saving throws on the repelling blast.

While I agree that Lesser Restoration is a great spell, the situations where I use it are much less frequent than when I use Aid. I think part of the issue that DMs' have with Tasha's Mind Whip is the "DM vs Player" mentality. Honestly if the players screw up your monster, no big deal. IMO DMs that get so frustrated over their monsters being stopped should stop and consider why. I have had way to many DMs that felt like we were ruining their fun defeating monsters, and I never understood that. Yes it can suck as a player to be hit with it, but you have a team around you. As you mentioned, it's mostly for taking out the "one big bad". The other problem I see is that a lot of DMs tend to just want to throw one giant monster at players. That makes these type of "debuff" spells super strong because you are already dealing with action economy deficit for the big bad (typically). I know it's harder to balance lots of monsters and keeping up with init, etc, but it really helps to limit the power of these spells. Then you just have to worry about the fireballs. ;-)

In the games I run, I implement exhaustion by also implementing/enforcing the starvation rules in D&D. In almost all of the games I play, there is typically one player that takes the spell Goodberry and will state that (1) berry is enough to cover an entire meal. I have always agreed with this, as it is stated explicitly in the rhetoric of the spell, but I have a bit of a twist to it to keep the realist/survival aspects of my games. The thematic reason behind the change is that an individual can live off of a single type of food for so long before they become malnourished and need to consume other foods to gain the nutrients they need. A player can live off Goodberry for a number of days equal to 3 + Proficiency bonus + Constitution modifier rather than the standard starvation rules of 3 + Constitution modifier. I also adapt this ruling for my players that are playing as vampires that need to drink blood, the players that I've tricked and turned into illithids, and other types of monster PC's they want to be/get forced into. It's not a massive change to the standard starvation rules, but it's enough of a nerf to Goodberry that it allows the players to be resourceful with their spells but also keeps a bit of struggle in the background for the GM to play with.
