Pernicious Anemia is not the same as B12 deficiency. B12 deficiency is simply not getting enough vitamin B12 in the diet, but the patient can absorb it once it is given orally and the patient fully recovers. Pernicious Anemia is the final stage of the body's inability to absorb any B12 orally as it is incurable at this stage. The stomach lacks intrinsic factor which is necessary to absorb B12 orally from food or supplements. Therefore, an intramuscular injection of Vitamin B12 must be given once or twice monthly for life. If a patient does not take the injections, the disorder will be fatal, hence its name, "pernicious," meaning fatal. The symptoms tend to be neurological in nature and they cause damage to the spinal cord resulting in temporary paralysis due to a low pulse in the legs, until treatment is given. Many other symptoms are present as well.
